How To: Power Your Computer With Car Batteries

Posted March 03, 2008 9:22 AM

From Gizmodo:

Taking a lesson from the Tim Allen school of modding, one man rebuilt his UPS with a bit more kick. Because the UPS was only able to run his RAID-wielding desktop for three minutes before shutting down, he decided to add two 24V car batteries to the equation (the maximum that his UPS could tolerate). The good news: it worked, and will run his computer for an hour plus.

There must be 24 Volt car batteries where that man has used them.

I have never seen a 24 Volt car battery.

However, there's nothing new with that idea, because I've been doing that since 1993.

Unlike the unsealed lead-acid car battery, I use sealed no-maintenance Lead-Acid Truck Batteries, and no fumes arrive in the room where the batteries are.

Just to be careful, I have installed the truck batteries outside the house, with a pair of HRC fuses in the battery DC line, to prevent fire in case of a short circuit.

So, it is easy to do for yourself.

My UPS runs 2 computers + Monitors, a Fax-Catcher, Telephone system, 2 printers, all at Mains voltage 230 Volts, plus an emergency light at 24 Volts, and can run the assembled hardware for over 12 hours.

Kind Regards....

I'm very impressed Sparky! I think I need to rethink my backup systems.
