Beijing's Olympic Building Boom

Posted February 29, 2008 9:03 AM

From mental_floss Blog:

We've been reading about China's construction plans for years, and wondered whether all those huge buildings will be ready in time for the 2008 Olympics. Now those buildings are opening for business, one by one.

If you visit the Olympics in China, or watch therm on the TV, spare a thought for those who had their homes destroyed, to make way for the big show.

Remember too, as you buy those very cheaply made goods, how many of your local factories have closed, with loss of jobs, as Walmart and others rake in the cash from those cheap imports.

Kind Regards....

Don't worry Sparkstation. The Chinese economy is pure momentum now, a house of cards. Any moment all that over-building is going to catch up with them, and when it does, it will be ugly.

Remember, China only works if it has somebody to sell to, and with the U.S. in a recession, there's less people to sell to. Economists will tell you that the rest of the world has "decoupled" from the U.S. economy. That sounds all well and good, but don't ask them how, because b.s. answers like that don't actually have logic behind them, it's just a way of rationalizing away the inevitable slowdown. Remember the internet bubble? Remember the housing market? Well, China's next and India isn't far behind.

With all the negative (deserved by the way) attention they are getting for human rights, pollution, kidnapping, accidents with fatalities and the list goes on and on and on, they might be in for a surprise. Some people will go but maybe not as many as initially was predicted. That would also be a bit of a pisser on their parade.

I have been to China several times and the last time it was with my family. I will probably never go back as that last one was the most horrible experience you can imagine. My wife speaks 2 dialects and is Chinese so you would expect her to be alright but no, they preyed on us as they would on any other "visitor" and the experience is not nice. The only time my visits to China were fine was for work with local chaperones who are respected or feared by the riff raff on the street. Without one of those you are as game as game can be and you will end up as a victim of some sort of con. We did and we did not even see it coming to begin with. You end up seeing ghosts everywhere and you mistrust every person you meet. Not good for China to have that happening to visitors. If any of you decide to go, please take my advise and try to learn all you can from any source of info you can get about what sort of cons that are going around because you will need that info on the streets of any city in China. I am sorry to be this pessimistic but even my wife was ashamed to be Chinese at the end of it all and we were all glad to be back home.
