Shark Eats Anti-Shark Device In Test (Oops)

Posted March 05, 2008 8:49 AM

From OhGizmo!:

As you might expect, that headline doesn't tell anything close to the whole story, but it's essentially true and dripping with irony. And I like the picture. In a test off the coast of South Australia, a Shark Shield device (which is supposed to repel sharks with a conductive field that causes them to experience uncomfortable muscle spasms if they get too close) was chomped on by a 12 foot long Great White shark.

"which is supposed to repel sharks with a conductive field that causes them to experience uncomfortable muscle spasms if they get too close"

Instead of "experience uncomfortable muscle spasms" it should have read "tingling sensation in its nose which pissed it off real bad and made it chew on the cause of its distress"

Lucky it was not a "live" test so to speak.

Makes me remember that invention that was supposed to deter sharks "nibbling" at you. It was some sort of container that floated in the water which was open at the top end. You were supposed to climb in it and the container stopped your muscle signals from reaching the sharks which was supposed to make you "unattractive" to them, yeah right. They played with the thing, broke the thing, noticed the muscle signals inside and ate whatever was in it anyway, experiment went back to the drawing board and from there in the archives. It is still gathering dust in some dusty old cupboard in some attorneys office. LOL

Great story! L'arroseur arrosé...

But I've seen an electrical device, to tow behind a boat, supposed to attract the fish, with a view to catching them. Can't say if it worked very well - round here the Mackerel will bite on an empty hook, and there are very few great sharks.

It sounds to me like they conducted the test using the wrong sort of shark. The phrase '"nobody wearing a Shark Shield has ever been attacked by a shark." reminds me of the urban myth that no human has ever been attacked by a dolphin. (Yes they have) The question that needs to be asked is, prove it!

Oh boy. One would have thought by now that everyone knows that sharks will eat anything, anything at all.

Just go to http://www.slagoon.com for proof.

When a shark is hungry, it just eats anything.

Kind Regards....
