Security experts take over power grid in minutes

Posted April 10, 2008 8:47 AM

From Newlaunches.com:

Ira Winkler, a penetration-testing consultant has confessed that his team has managed to gain network access into a power plant's digital infrastructure. Not only were they inside the employee's machines but they had complete access to the central console to monitor actual power production. All this was done with a single day's preparation and about a day's access. The penetration team started by tapping into distribution lists for SCADA user groups, where they harvested the e-mail addresses of people who worked for the target power company.

In my early days of working at the Electrical generating and Distribution systems in New Zealand, there were no computers, SCADA, or software, all that was still in the future.

All controls were Hardware Controls, operated by living souls.

A far more reliable setup, but even then occasional Operator-caused mistakes occurred.

Mind you, it was not possible to corrupt a Country's Power network, as may happen so easily these days.

Kind Regards....

Such news does recommend off grid building backups to maintain vital power supplies. This report is an espionage story, and calls for increased grid defense to be undertaken by the Department of Energy in the US, if not the Department of Defense. Deciding what Bureacracy is actually responsible and capable of the defensive mission is beyond little old me, and will likely turn out to be the cause of eventual sucessful disruption of the the Grid, since the publication of this story.

Rod Serling was terribly distressed by the employment of a barometric bomb after a show he made up with that as a story element. It had not been used as a tactic of assasination prior to his show, and brought up ethical problems for him as an artist and storyteller.

This story when read in full may well present to the writers and publishers a similiar delemma. They now find themselves in a position of responsiblity where they might better seriously consider alerting institutions properly equipped to prevent the accomplishment of the scenario of a terrorist take over of The Grid, the story itself enables and makes more likely.

I used to be entertained by spy stories, but now am frightened by them, as well as tired of having to become one in my daily life.
