If You Could Control Anything Via the Internet ...

Posted April 15, 2008 9:57 AM

From Technobabble:

I've long pondered this question: If you could control anything via the Internet, what would it be? Over the years, I've come up with lots of crazy ideas, like RFID tagged socks (August '04) and net-controlled hot tubs. And I've stumbled into plenty of others, like the Proliphix Internet-controlled programmable thermostat. Sometimes it seems like half of the crazy ideas aren't so crazy … to the point that someone's already doing it, somewhere … If you could control anything (other than an ATM) over the Internet, what would it be?

I would not want anything I have controlled over the Internet, because if I can access the control, some hacker can access it as well. I shudder at the thought of some hacker turning up the thermostat on my hot tub (or down, for that matter) at a most inoportune time...

Politicians and Politival advertising, requiring a lie detection scan for every word spoken.

About a month ago I read about lie-detection via telephone. I forget the systems name, but it's being used in the UK. The respondents voice patterns are mapped as they answer a series of question, and changes in pitch/timing etc are used to suggest if they are lying. At present it's being used by local authorities trying to identify likely welfare-claimant cheats. Those identified as 'possibly lying' are then seen for a face-to-face interview and more rigorous questioning. If the system is successful (and they claim it is), it wont be long (if not already) before it's being use by a whole array of people - Insurance/Recruitment/IR etc. Politicians are easy - their mouths move.

The whole voice print thing was debunked here in the US, and was declared not trust-worthy, and subsequently not admissible in court or for any other reason, for that matter.

But, then again, England doesn't have Constitutional Law, and you're basically guilty until proven innocent. And your humongous Civil Service has to have some reason to justify they're masturbatory actions.

It's nothing like as formal as that! What they intend to do is 'stress analyse' benefit claiments voices, so if, when they get asked 'the question', there is the slightest hint that they may be lying, they will get called in to justify the 12 kids, 6 dogs, 43 cats, 2 hippo's, 1 donkey and the fact that they don't have a job.

Hee hee. I'm going to have to root out the clipping. The people phoning do have a script, but the software analyses overall stress and presents it's 'probability of lying' on an sliding scale. Civil Liberties are a bit freaked because of people who may be especially stressed by such interviewing/questioning ( I think they have to tell people they're being analysed). Like a lot of Government experiments, this is getting trialed on those who can't/wont resist (bet they do the same with ID cards). It's not a quantum leap to imagine insurance assessors beginning to make more phone calls. All those people making flood claims can wait another year for payment - good job too, 'cos I don't believe they had an axeminster in the bog either. I was going to joke about analyzing job applications, but some major companies already employ graphologists !

They'll never stress those people on the dole, they're always pissed ! You didn't need to say dogs - pitbull would have been more accurate. Oh no, now I'm in trouble ! It's going to get worse, I've been claiming Child Benefit for wee vermin and they've decided photo proof isn't enough. I'll have to download a new batch of ID documents.

Nobody ever get's proven innocent, just found 'not-guilty'. A small difference in words, but a wide difference in meaning.

Civil Service is public-school boys.

A way of getting around those telephone helplines and the further website "webform emails" when you need to talk to a real Living Soul = someone who is able to actually resolve issue/s.

I've just had major problems over the last several days with Paypal, still unresolved, because of their crazy systems.

Kind Regards....
