Stupid Science Word of the Month: Unparticle

Posted April 16, 2008 5:07 PM

From Discover | RSS:

\un-pär-ti-cl\ n. (2007) A particle whose mass is unrelated to its energy. Last year, Harvard University physicist Howard Georgi proposed the existence of a strange new kind of matter he dubbed "unparticle stuff." Unlike ordinary particles, which increase in mass as they increase in energy, unparticles are unconstrained bundles of energy and momentum. Georgi compares unparticles to a system of photons, which remain massless no matter how energized they become because they never had any mass to start with. What makes the unparticle different from the photon is that it can have any mass, depending on how you measure it. According to Georgi, if unparticles exist, they would interact with ordinary matter so weakly they could be detected only in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the superpowered particle accelerator scheduled to begin operating later this year.

We shall never know the true complexity of Creation, theorize as much as we like.

kind Regards....

Well, we'll never know the truth unless we keep searching.

The great unappreciated beauty of science is that anyone can propose a better theory, but then it gets tested to destruction. If it survives all challenges (and is therefore the best theory available ) it gets accepted (until a better theory come along).

Compare that open minded and humble worldview with a religious attitude of "We already know the TRUTH, so don't ask questions".

If there is a god, surely it'd want use to know and appreciate its handiwork.

Be aware that as you speak those words you should realize that the introduction of SCIENCE and of higher education was initiated and developed by people who were believers in a GOD, for just the reason you suggest. They were not atheists.

Sparky,

Surely you don't mean that.

"We shall never know the true complexity of Creation, theorize as much as we like."

That seems to denigrate what we do know giving ground to the creationists. Would it not be more accurate to say; We do know the complexity of Creation, but not all of it?

But just this moment I realized you used the word "Creation" and capitalized it at that. I read the statement from a purely materialist point of view as meaning all of existence, all of the universe.

" \un-pär-ti-cl\ n. (2007) A particle whose mass is unrelated to its energy."

First we define it.

"According to Georgi, if unparticles exist, they would interact with ordinary matter so weakly they could be detected only in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the superpowered particle accelerator scheduled to begin operating later this year."

Second we waffle with a big fat IF!

A figment of an overactive imagination!

I second those remarks. Besides, IF the theory of relativity is accurate and energy and mass are interchangable, it should be impossible. Or is this an attack on TOR?

Another interesting start that has gone from theory to the personal belief structure.

Some believe in a "God" and others do not, and some find it very annoying that the god thing has to be thrown into discussions of things that are totally unrelated to belief.

to attempt to bring this back to "Stupid Science Word" sounds to me like someone's grant was up for review and he really had nothing to justify his support funding, so when in doubt; baffle them with bullshit in place of brilliance.

I am so glad I never bothered to follow through with a Piled Higher and Deeper, far better to be creative and unencumbered with the need to either convert others or make up new words.

have a great week, and live life this isn't a rehearsal, unless you believe it is and that is OK too.
