Total Phone and Email Database Proposed In UK

Posted May 20, 2008 9:01 AM

From Slashdot:

The Times of London is reporting a proposal for a massive government database holding details of all phone calls, emails, and time spent on the Internet. This is to be justified as being 'part of the fight against crime and terrorism.' Quoting: 'Internet service providers and telecoms companies would hand over the records to the Home Office under plans put forward by officials.' If you want to write to representatives to let them know your views, contact details are available at Write to Them."

Hello.......Hello......Get a life.

All electronic communications are recorded, including every conversation, and "voice recognition" software has been easily used, to identify the speaker/s, and have been like this for many years.

Refer Echelon also Carnivore.

Kind Regards....

Putting aside the questionable veracity of the reported capabilities of Echelon and Carnivore, it says something that governments are willing to openly consider these types of programs. At least when government has the shame to keep them secret, there is an implicit understanding that it is wrong. When they find the courage to make the programs public knowledge, the implication is now either "the people are too stupid to understand this is wrong" or "the people are powerless to stop us." Either way, we are well down the slippery slope and picking up speed.

Once again I place my trust in our government (whatever flavour they are) having a proven track record of total incompetence in handling any large data management system. Several other projects have been abandoned in the past because the continual interference of ministers in the planning or running of them made the task impossible.

Quote: Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.
- Benjamin Franklin

I meant to add in a description of a book I purchased back in 1970, "The Data Bank Society" published in the UK, where the authors were extremely concerned about what has happened since, and very much worse than they envisaged nearly 40 years ago.

Kind Regards....

What possible justification can there be for such a system, given that there is already a security camera for every fourteen head of population in the UK?

The scheme will disappear up its own Cloaca_Maxima. In the limit there will be more people watching people's behaviour than there are people to watch!

"a security camera for every fourteen head of population in the UK?"

A recent report from the police stated that these cameras had been very little help in convicting criminals because the image quality was generally too poor to use.

Perhaps the investment has been amortised over a very short time period.

Hello PWSlack

the question I just have to ask: How many cameras record your visits to the Bothy, and what you do while you are there?

If I was closer to your location, I'd call in for a piping hot cup of Earl Grey tea, and a few English muffins.

Kind Regards....

Who was it that said, "You're never alone with a mobile 'phone"?
