Tech Watch: Opel Eye Warns Drivers About Speed Limits

Posted June 18, 2008 5:42 PM

From Inside Line Automotive News:

RUSSELSHEIM, Germany — The Opel Eye, an in-vehicle camera that can read speed limit and no-passing signs, was introduced on Wednesday. Opel said the system will be available in early 2009 on the Opel Insignia, with other models to follow shortly. The high-tech system, which was developed by GM/Opel and auto supplier Hella, bundles two functions. The Traffic Sign Recognition function reads the speed limit and no-passing signs and displays them on the instrument panel. A lane departure warning system alerts drivers when they veer out of the lane. "These two systems improve driving safety, reduce stress and can even prevent costly speeding tickets," Opel said in a statement.

Bigger Batteries, bigger alternators to run all the extra electronics.

If the driver does not "notice the signs" he/she should not be behind the wheel.

Kind Regards....

Even worse, he/she might be so distracted by all the pretty visuals that he/she ends up causing an accident instead.

Yes, but as people is getting more stupid day after day because of lack of education and brainwashing, they surely will be convinced that this is good for them. Those people don´t use to think on global consequences and some companies only think on selling more and if possible to higher prices.

My Tom Tom (GPS Navigation system) tells me if I am passing though a speed limit at 5 KMH or more than posted. It has the speed limit data for all of Europe.....I really should not need it (nobody should), but its good to be reminded occasionally.....

This Opel system sounds like an expensive method and has no navigational help.

Can it read signs that are half turned or dirty. Can it guess that in the summer school holidays in Italy that the posted signs are not changed for the lower speed limits??? and and and......!!

No thanks.

Wait till it's tied into the gps and the on board computers and video systems and the cell system then the government will control the car to slow it down and then it will let you know the ticket is in the mail and if you have to many points it will tell you to pull over and wait for the officer.

And you think I joke? It will come to pass some where in this small world.

Anyhow so much for my soap box rant.

I don't think at all it's a joke!!!

You put the finger in the wound (as we say in Spain)

Theoretically we live in a free society, but if we compare our freedom constraints against those who live under "Old" Dionysus I in Plato's times I don't know really who was more free, and we live in "democratic" systems and "Old" Dionysus I got into history as "Syracuse Tyrannous"
