Inside the Solar Hydrogen House: No More Power Bills--Ever

Posted June 19, 2008 8:54 AM

From Scientific American:

EAST AMWELL, N.J.--Mike Strizki has not paid an electric, oil or gas bill--nor has he spent a nickel to fill up his Mercury Sable--in nearly two years. Instead, the 51-year-old civil engineer makes all the fuel he needs using a system he built in the capacious garage of his home, which employs photovoltaic (PV) panels to turn sunlight into electricity that is harnessed in turn to extract hydrogen from tap water.

Well, duh. Spend half a million dollars and you too can be energy independent. I can also put half a million dollars into a lowly savings account at 5% interest and collect $25,000 per year. That's more than enough to pay my utility bills and fill the tanks on my Suburban, Ford F-150, Jetta, motorcycles, and water ski boat. It's like saying we can send men to the moon. Well, we did, for a price. A great feat to be sure, and the technology it helped develop could very well been priceless, but I'll spend my money elsewhere for now.

Remember he only invested 100 grand, the rest was paid for by the good people of New Jersey. I could find a lot of ways to save/reduce energy bills with a half a million.

I could insulate my entire house so no weather at all could get to it.!

And I am sure the people of New Jersey would be happy to know they have subsidized this guy's zero energy cost. How about state tax credits for many people to add another 8 inches of insulation to their attics? $400,000 will buy a lot fiberglass insulation and the net energy savings and reduction of carbon footprint will far outstrip any reduction from this guy's science experiment. But we all know that fiberglass insulation isn't sexy like PV arrays and hydrogen powered cars, so don't hold your breath.
