Studies suggest the ability to deal with people using a bit of discretion and understanding — even on the shop floor — can make a real difference. So what makes for a good and a bad line manager in your experience, and how important is the relationship between shop floor and management personnel for the quality and efficiency of manufacturing operations?

The ability to give and to unserstand simple instructions is paramount in my book.

The way you learn to understand simple instruction is to learn to give simple instruction.

Keeping things simple at work make everyone relax.

I work in a PVC pipe plant. What I have found out are two things:

1) Empathy: Remember that your operators are people. Speak their language and understand them.

2) Know the work: Obviously management isn´t suppose to do the physical work, but every now and then its good to do the work yourself. Ask people for the way they do the job and try it. Obviously NOT when everything is in PANIC mode, but get a feel for what abilities the job requires.

Having worked with different types of managers, my observation is that if you treat people with dignity and respect, you will get better results. They will want to work harder to please you.

I did work at a large company where management training required reading and using principles from the book "The Go-Getter" by Peter B. Kyne. The results: 2 employees committed suicide, 1 was hospitalized for suicide intervention, 54 employees found other work. The remaining employees remained but the morale just kept getting worse and worse.

I have worked for companies where management really cared about ALL employees. The teamwork and performance was AWESOME. And most workers actually looked forward to going to work. It was a pleasant place to work, (Hard work, but very rewarding). Management's attitude toward employees makes a tremendous difference

"The shit rolls down" is the slogan for some management personnel, they will take no blame or responsibility either.

Personally I have worked in the ship where staff are proffesionals. You know your limits because you know what you do. but coiming to the onshore, the people are different. the managers will embarass you at will and at any slightest provocation, there is threats to relief you of you job, quest for authority and power was so much.

in fact you cannot make mistakes without a query. the managers will say talk to us from outside the gate. there are so many people who are waiting for this opportunity etc.

in this situation, the staff is there because he has no other job, the moral is that bad am so sure like "how i wish this company pays me off".

'Studies suggest' <slaps furry head with paw>

You need 'studies' to find out what is blindingly obvious to all of us?

I wonder how much some a$$hole doing his MBA was paid for the 'studies'?

Because we need emotional support, a machine will never be a superior boss. Workers that are most productive are those that are encouraged positively to do better in their jobs.

Active participation is a key ingredient in improving morale and allowing for acceptance of plant-wide decisions. Management needs to be in tune with the actual production in order to create efficiencies, otherwise nobody wins.
