This may be to mess up workplaces all over the world.

Nope, no hoax, I remember making these as a kid. Of course that was pre-internet, tv and all sorts of other modern technology, when we were forced to find our own amusements (also known as tormenting our elders).

Of course, we called them "bombs", not balloons.

Was just making fun of making square sheets out of rectangular sheets....

People are filling them using lighters and making paper rockets too.
