Fuel from Waste

Posted July 24, 2008 8:22 AM

From The Engineer:

Chemical giant Ineos has developed a technique to produce bioethanol in large quantities from municipal solid waste, organic commercial waste and agricultural residues. The company believes that, using the process, one tonne of dry waste can be converted into about 400 litres (100 gallons) of ethanol, which can either be blended with traditional fuels or replace them altogether. The technology - already proven at pilot plant scale - uses a three-stage process

Brilliant idea. Now all we need is to figure out a way to make politicians direct all their speeches into this plant. All the crap, bullshit and garbage they spew in an hour would be enough to plunge OPEC into bankruptcy.

I just hope that it doesn't cost more than the finished product can be sold for. It would solve the problem of where to put the waste too. It may be a good thing, but it also may just be "doing something" to make the politicians feel good and give them something to brag about. I hope it really produces lower-cost ethanol.
