Facing the Freshwater Crisis

Posted July 24, 2008 8:17 AM

From Scientific American:

A friend of mine lives in a middle-class neighborhood of New Delhi, one of the richest cities in India. Although the area gets a fair amount of rain every year, he wakes in the morning to the blare of a megaphone announcing that freshwater will be available only for the next hour. He rushes to fill the bathtub and other receptacles to last the day. New Delhi's endemic shortfalls occur largely because water managers decided some years back to divert large amounts from upstream rivers and reservoirs to irrigate crops.

It sounds like the distribution system is undersized to me. Wanna buy some large pipes? Nice cheap price. <Splutter, wheeze>

So much for buying a car that runs on water.

Well, while the rest of us drink water and drive cars that run on gas, the guys who own cars that run on water can always drink gas (not a problem since they're full of hot air anyway.)

Laugh if you like. I think when India solves its infrastructure issues, like this, we are in serious trouble. The world's economy is poised to make a MASSIVE shift towards Asia and that is not good for us, as we are struggling, as is.

While developing infrastructure correctly is always a concern for countries on the verge of a economic boom (those who do it right prosper, those who don't stay third world), I think India is going to get it right and be a powerhouse. We need to find something that they need that we have and just take that market if we want any type of favorable trade with them.

Freshwater may be a concern. Can we corner a desalinization system to sell them?

Hello ShakespeareTheEngineer

Fortunately or not, New Zealand recently signed a massive trade deal with China.

Hopefully we may export some of our surplus water to the thirsty, in the form of milk, for a good price.

Kind Regards....

Interesting. I will have to look for an article on the Sino-Kiwi pact and read up. Thanks for the head's up.
