Apple and Sony's Newest Idea: Viewing Goggles

Posted August 20, 2008 8:20 AM

From Coolest Gadgets:

We have covered viewing goggles like the Vuzix iWear and myvu before, and these have yet to catch on to the general populace. Maybe it's the way they look, because no one wants to walk around looking like Cyclops from the X-men films. There is a rumor going about that Apple is working to change the portable viewing arena with some fancy goggles that will allow portable viewing of video files. These video files can be taken off of an iPod or other Portable Media Player (PMP). I have even heard that electronics giant Sony is working in partnership with Apple to perfect the technology of the screen inside the goggles. Of course, I really don't have any validation of these rumors, other than the source I have listed below. I'm surprised all the other gadget blogs aren't abuzz about it.

Better still: You can place a camera on your dashboard, plug it into the goggles and watch a LIVE & IN COLOR picture of the view out your windshield! In real time! While you drive!

Isn't technology wonderful?

Great for a flight simulator where you can see the real cockpit and then have the out-the-window view computer generated. Simple head tracking is all that is required.

What ever happened to those virtual reality headsets they promised us. You know, move your head and look around in a game?

Your silly idea isn't so silly. I'd place a camera high on the passenger side so I can better see around the vehicle in front. How about integrating object recognition software to spot police far off in the distance?

Hello Drone 601

Thank you for your suggestion, for which the International Car Manufacturers Association has just sent me a large cheque, enabling me to retire in comfort.

The car makers have decided in the interests of safety, to place a camera at each side, as well as the front and rear.

The output of those cameras to be fed to a switching circuit controlled by eye movement sensed behind the front lenses of the viewing goggles.

So all you will need to do, is move your eyes to the correct position, and the appropriate camera will switch into the viewing goggle screens.

Sad to inform you, that if your optics are like Marty Feldman you will not be given a licence to use the Viewing goggles.

The cameras are to be twin lens of course, fed to the left and right goggle screen as required, for proper stereoscopic vision, and enable the all-important depth perception.

No more will there be accidents of children being backed over, in driveways, or the like.

Kind Regards....

Well maybe they will be a good idea. I see that to many of these high tech gadgets are seperating people from the rest of society. Computers putting more and more pople into the caves we left centurys ago. Now kids have IPODS and Game Boys all types of things that prevent converations of compete with the parent.

I just worry about the effect it has on kids.

Sigh ... ... and I worry about the effect it has on the thousands of people posting "This-n-That" every "Here-n-There" on the www without a glint of concern as to whether their post is readable ...
