Throwing Scissors or Tantrums

Posted August 27, 2008 8:48 AM

Everyone experiences frustration at times in the workplace, but we always imagined hospital operating theaters to be havens of calm, professional deportment. Not always so, according to recent reports. A surgeon at one hospital threw a pair of scissors that were too dull to cut suture material; a nurse had to sidestep the flying tool. Incidents happen because the O.R. environment is so high stress, explained a hospital spokesperson. Another doc lost his cool and launched two 10 lb sandbags, used to position a patient's arm. What do you do when stressed at work? Do you hurl things? Does it help?

Being of sound mind and having more than my fair share of inner calm! I, on occasion have been know to throw things! Screwdrivers are a favorite! When somebody uses your screwdriver to chisel out a wall and totally buggers the end up without admitting to it can really wind me up! I find that the sudden burst of energy is enough to take the edge off my temper which in turn shows the culprit how annoyed they have made me! Usually the screwdriver is replaced without further words needed! If the screwdriver actually sticks into the wall or door followed by a Conan the Barbarian war cry, a coffee and a bun sometimes appear followed by a new screwdriver! The effect can be most gratifying not that I condone throwing things but I would rather throw an object that a punch!

I do not know what the warranties are like in the U.K.

Here in the states, its been a while since I brought in a screwdriver, but Craftsman, SK, Snap-On and Husky are warrantied for life.

I remember 25-30 years ago I brought one of my dads screwdriver in with the end chipped off, (thats what big screwdrivers seemed to be used for until we bought a set of pry bars). Brought it in to Sears (Craftsman) They asked what happen. embassessed I said it snapped off. they replaced it no more questions.

Craftsman Crescent wrenchs are the same. (I do not know why they use it as a hammer).

I do enjoy those kind of warranties.

The effect can be most gratifying not that I condone throwing things but I would rather throw an object that a punch!

Raised on a farm and working with dairy cows, I learned at a young age to control ones temper, you lose it and take it out on the bovine feels good at that instance, but the only one that gets hurt is yourself.

But it does no good to keep it in.

Must admit that I do like the Snap-On stuff! Over here in Spain, the quality is limited! I purchased a driver from an electrical wholesaler only to have the tip break on the same day! Would they replace it.....hell no! Would I buy from them again.....hell no! Same as always with tools, you pay for the quality! My Snap-On side cutters are about 8 years old now and still cut like new. Only I use them!

My Scottish Granparents had a whailing tree and sandbags.

If we had problems we had to go to the tree and yell scream hit or beat the tree. It helped us to clear our minds and get rid of the anger.

We could also kick sandbags but be careful not to break toes or an ankle.

I can't remember the last time I lost my temper, I seem to be able to take everything without getting stressed. At work people get wound up then come & talk to me in order to calm down again.

I do have this nagging feeling though, if anyone did manage to to get me sufficiently angry, I would suddenly become the local axe murderer, let's hope I never find out.

When at work I usually go for a walk to cool down a bit.

At home I have a heavy punching bag set up in the basement. I used to hit the walls at home but it was taking to much of my time to repair to holes.

Oh boy, can I relate....

I always said that it'd be better hitting the wall than the offending person(s). The message is still very clear in their eyes. Unless of course, you hit a stud behind the drywall and break a knuckle. Anyway....although wall-punching is satisfying, the constant nagging in the following weeks to fix the damn hole is not so I did the same thing you did and installed a punching bag in the garage. Works wonders....

In my country most walls are concrete and stone bricks so it is an unhealthy thing to do

I told one of my old bosses I thought he was wrong about a design issue. He refused to buy a manual to check it. So I purchased one during lunch. The next day I fixed the problem and showed him. He then picked up MY manual and threw it across the room. Dang I was mad. I wanted to pick him and his chair up and cast him out the window. I actually am strong enough to do that. However, realizing that I went to lunch and during lunch I called the owner and told him I was taking the rest of the day off.

About a year later I quit and started a branch office for another company and am now their competition. We have went from 1 person to 11 full time people and 1 partime person in a year and a half and still growing in a depressed economy.

Sounds like you channeled that anger very positively! I too have been known to blow off steam occasionally, and I must admit, a short outburst is relaxing - and far better than staying upset for days and weeks. But the older I get, the less likely I am to do something like that. And after work, well, ain't that what beer is for? Stress relief!

Some doctors are just stupid spoilt brats so what else can you expect from them. Just because they got through a uni course does not not make them cleverer or better people. Any good doctor should know if they are feeling stressed with their job it is time to get out of it. The only way to get rid of stress is to remove the stressor nothing else works, doctor should be working to remove workplace stresses not causing them for other team members.

"Any good doctor should know if they are feeling stressed with their job it is time to get out of it."

I guess the key to this is that one word - "good". Keep in mind, half of all doctors graduated in the bottom 50% of their class, and even the bottom-most one calls himself "Doctor". I'm not saying all of the bottom half are not good doctors, obviously a high GPA is not a relevant measure, and some of the top half are likely to be prima donnas as you pointed out. But not all are educated equal (or created equal). Some should pick another career field immediately...

I once threw an orange as hard as I could against a radiator at work...it made one hell of a mess and was extremely gratifying even if I did have to wipe off all that juice.
(I was extremely stressed and 'running on empty' at the time)

Yes... but just the one guy who worked for me and he knew what the trouble was.
It made a cool noise too.... SQUBONG !

For ages afterwards I'd notice the odd orange spot on a wall...it splashed a good distance!

SQUBONG???? Del, you're good with words, but this must have something to with the King's (QUEEN'S?) English and ours in the US of A. Cause I can't even imagine THAT sound. And, worse luck, I haven't seen a heating radiator for years, to experiment with.

Can I come visit you, and try it? I'd probably visit NZ while I was there, too, so the trip wouldn't be totally impossible to explain to my wife.
