How Did You Find Your Last Job?

Posted September 21, 2008 8:00 AM

If you are looking for a job, there's lots of free advice available. The Internet will help you find resume services, advice, job listings, headhunters, search firms, search engines, help wanted ads, job banks, and job fairs. While there are dozens of such services, some say the best jobs are never advertised — that you find them through "networking" with your old colleagues. What has worked best for you?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pump Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pump Technology today.

I find the best way to find your dream job is look for the companies you want to work for. Once you locate them (make a good list), go to their web site and search their career section. You will be surprised as to how many of the companies you would like to work for are hiring. Even if there is not a career section, you can send an email to the HR person (you can get that email by making a quick phone call to the companies main line. When you do call, you need to keep in mind you need to get by the dreaded GATE KEEPER. The easy way for this is tell them you were asked by a friend that works there to email HR with a cover letter requesting to submit your resume. You could also try using a the name of someone that is listed on the web site as a contact name. There is a bit of a risk there, as they may no longer work there or the gate keep might put you on hold and call them.

The key is to go find the company you want to work with, as the odds are you will be able to find that dream job a lot easier then you think. Make sure you have a customized resume for that position you want and also ensure that if there is a job description on the career page make the resume sound like the posted job description. Good luck!

One last word, send a resume to all the job hunting companies and let them find you a job. There is no cost to you as they get their fees from the company hiring. LOL

The last job I just walked in cold called the HR at Texas Instruments and told them I wanted a job and had kist move back to the area to care for my elderly mother. I did not know if they were hiring or not. I wanted to work there it was close to where I needed to be.

Found a lot of jobs that way actually took my resume in and told them I was looking for a job and almost always got one. I don't call back and beg I can always start a businesses if I needed too.

Develop a list of all the headhunters that deal with companies in your field in the area you want to work. Send resumes to all of them. Some may say this is overly redundant, but first some companies only work with a specific person or firm and second you may be considered for a job by one headhunter and not by another b/c most will recommend only their top candidates. After getting your name out this way start looking on your own. Personal networking can't be discounted and at least you'll have the ability to focus on places you'd really like to work while the headhunters look more broadly. After you've found a job SAVE THE LIST. I was downsized at my last position and had my list from before and was able to get my updated resume into the hands of nearly 80 headhunters within an hour of being released solely due to already having a developed list.

Research, research, research... after determining what area I wanted to work in, I did my homework to determine which companies/firms were the most stable and offered the most growth potential. I arrived at the interview 15 minutes before start time with solid questions in hand. The hiring official commented on how I knew as much about the firm's history and areas of practice as she did. Before leaving the interview, I assured the hiring official that having done my homework and after meeting with her at the firm, I wanted the position and was certain I was the best candidate for the job. She agreed and an offer was extended soon afterwards.

The lesson, do you homework about a potential employer. Resources are available but you have to be smart; not all resources and recruiters are the same.

Here at MRI Person County, we pride ourselves on the relationship we have with our candidates and clients and the service we provide to both. We have placed plant managers, sales personnel, and engineers (electrical, mechanical, manufacturing, gears, etc.), to name a few.

I can be reached at kimberlyt@roxboro.net or you may visit our site at www.mriofpersoncounty.com for more information. We do not charge our candidates for our services but we offer a wealth of experience and knowledge to assist you in your job search.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

When my last employer decided to relocate their business, I knew that I did not want to move & don't like commuting so I visited every industrial estate within about a 30 mile radius & noted suitable candidates, checked them out via the net & sent CVs to those that looked promising.

That didn't help at all, I fell into the job I have now by talking to someone who new they were looking.

I have found jobs by approaching and by being approached. Here's something I picked up on - a lot (I won't say most, but a LOT) of the jobs you see advertised (even online such as on Monster) are only posted to meet a legal requirement that the opening be made known to the public. The person who will be promoted from within has been identified prior to the ad being approved. You might stand a chance of getting his job, though, or that of his subordinate who will be moved up into it.

Our company was a supporting member of the trade association of many of our customers.

I had helped many of our customers solve problems and improve their processes and posted many share my knowledge answers on their online community.

When it became obvious that I wasn't going to stay at my current employer (I went from managing 37 engineers and metallurgists and three labs to 3 people...) I sent my resume to the president of the association.

After several interviews with their new managing director, I got a brand new position.

Just like hairdressers, We all have a natural "following."
