What's All This About Being Green?

Posted October 22, 2008 12:00 AM

We're being bombarded with "green" messages these days about saving energy with pumps, using variable frequency drives, and proper sizing. What does all this mean to you in your job as a pump engineer? Is your company on a campaign to save energy? Is it putting up the money needed to survey the site, size pumps, and replace equipment? Or is it all just talk?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Pump Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Pump Technology today.

For my previous organisation which was a paper industry,it wasn't talk at all.It was all action,as on eof the most energy intensive industry,VFDs are becoming extremely quotidian in the Paper industry.

But I do agree,VFDs for pumps are much rarer than VFDs for other mechanical equipment.

I can understand use of VFD for variable speed control. But, please let me know, how it saves energy and what is normal pay back period.

I am about to put 3 pumps with 110KW in my factory. If I get convinced, I may add VFD.

Without a payback it is just green wash. A lot of emotions but very few are really looking at the numbers and what they mean. If the total cost (not just money) does not come down then it is not green, just marketing.

If "green" will force managment to let qualified engineers to properly apply pumping technology I am all for it.
