Should High-Tech Get Low Grades?

Posted October 02, 2008 8:36 AM

Add iPhones and iPods to the back-to-school supply list for the new millennium. This fall, a handful of universities will dole out wireless units to students for classroom use. Individual campus research shows that co-eds find their laptops too cumbersome to take to class; they prefer the portability of smaller devices. While students are obviously attracted to the freebies, professors see the potential distraction and don't want to compete for students' attention. Students who opt for the iPhone are expected to pay for the mobile service. Do you think the phones and iPods should be allowed in the classroom? Will wireless products in the classroom lead to high-tech education or low-tech learning?

NO WAY should they be allowed in class. It's just further deteoration of the education system. I am from the old school. When they say "you can lead a horse to water but......" that means it is up to the individual to learn and not for the system to make him learn.

I've never seen a blue screen of death in a book. There are no batteries to re-charge. It's always connected. Not affected by EMI, EMP. Will withstand MIL-STD-810 sand and dust, high temperature, low temperature, shock, and vibration with flying colors. In five years, it doesn't have to be re-issued in a new format or form factor. Fast, random access speeds. Easier and much faster to preview. Ever try to dog-ear a Kindle page? Or tab using Post-it notes?

If today's students find carrying a laptop to class too cumbersome, what will they do for a living when someone actually expects them to work? The term wuss comes to mind.

Technology should complement the learning process, not supplant it.
