Internet-ready Computers?

Posted October 18, 2008 12:00 AM

Well, that may soon be the case. If you've ever had "technical problems' setting up your Internet connections, you'll be happy to know that shortly laptop computers will be "ready to run" straight out of the box. As described in the October issue of Acoustics and Audio Technology, the computers will use GSM networks. Do you think that's a good idea?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Acoustics & Audio Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Acoustics & Audio Technology today.

they already are! the HP DV1050 notebook with a Vista Home Premium I bought 2 months ago immediately found my wireless modem/router the moment I turned it on from its box. I just supplied the username and password to the router, and voila! No configuration was needed whatsoever.

Not all users of notebooks will want to use (and pay for) the GSM technology.

These Notebook computers will no doubt, all use Windows Software, and the GSM connectivity will thus be invalidated on a Linux install.

And how will the custo0mer be advised about Data Sexcurity, because a Password will need to be set up on the Laptop before use, to maintain security.

Kind Regards....

The feature of 'network connections' disable it

That GSM connection is going to be far too expensive for those who are used to cheap/free wifi connections.

Besides that, my new Toshiba (now 6 months old) connected to my wireless router as soon as I fired it up. It then found our wireless network at my job and switches back and forth seamlessly.

Surprised me greatly!!

Of course, if the computer vendor absorbed the cost of the internet connection like Amazon does with my Kindle Whispernet(Sprint) access, I'd jump right on it.

It may amaze people, but much of my computer use does NOT involve internet access. IN fact I would feel more secure from virus and hackers with a non-internet-capable computer. So, for serious design and documentation an isolated computer is a better and safer choice, and installed access would be a deal-breaker.

I agree, once I had downloaded and saved all the porn I could fit on a 1 TB drive, surfing the web became a mundane redundancy. Now that I'm hiding from the Fed, the last thing I need is an assignable IP straight to my hideout. I didn't even know they got so uptight over barnyard fun. The more discreet these days, the better.

Hello Guest,

What with the early Echelon and later Carnivore spy networks, along with improvement of surveillance systems, it is already too late.

The "Authorities" should be a'knockin' at your door, about now.

Kind Regards....
