What's The Tackiest Aftermarket Add-On?

Posted October 22, 2008 6:00 AM by Steve Melito

K-Mart-grade wing-dings people buy for their cars. Plastic-chrome windshield-wiper deflectors? Ugh. Stick-on bullet holes? So bad, they're good. I have to take exception with their dissing of fuzzy dice, though—under most circumstances, I think those are pretty cool. And people tend to forget that fender portholes, fake versions of which are now obnoxiously slapped onto everything, were once one of the coolest signature styling accents on the early-50's Buicks. But I digress. What's your least favorite aftermarket add-on?

Skirts, airdams and wheel arch flares..when the wheels are still standard.

I have a suplementary gripe/question.

What is the point of Alloy wheels which are actually heavier than their steel equivalent.

I run special narrow rims made of wood with bakelite tyres for maximum mpg & tyre life (but minimum grip) This is only on the back 'cos I just lurve the back to be sliding about...I've added a 3tier wing at the back to help hold it back down tho' .
To enhance this effect I've got 20" discs at the front with special PTFE pads.

The dumbest thing I've seen is those 20"+ rims, with low profile tires on any 4wd truck or SUV. What the hell is that good for? No good off road, no good in the snow, so why bother have 4wd?

Another is the million watt sound system in a shite box, so when it's turned up, all you hear on the outside is the car rattling itself to pieces....a half mile away.

Spinners, point?

My old car had a few tacky aftermarket add-ons.

Honestly I loved my blackouts but admit they can be a bit cheesy. The chrome plating around the wheels was definately kinda wack but the previous owner did that.

As far as overall worst, I would have to go with Spinners followed closely by Whislters. (Although Bubb Rubb made those infamous)

Yup, it was a 92 i think, Mitsubishi Eclipse. I loved it while I had it until the transmission died on me. I don't think I could go for another 2 door though. Now its WRX all the way!

Trailer hitch testicles.

Some others that come to mind: Coffee can exhaust that make your Civic sound like a cracked out weed whacker. "Skateboard" tires on a jeep. (I even saw these on a minivan once) The "ball stuck in the window". Racing stickers. Spinner Hubcaps. Undermounted neon lights (Haven't actually seen these for a few years). Animal print seat covers. Jesus fish. Mirrored window tint. Cute antenna toppers.

..the person who bought and installed the hitch balls is way tackier I'm sure.

outside of that.. .... the spoilers get exponentially tackier for every inch taller than they would ever need to be if they were doing anything in the first place.

blame it on th A-Team

And here I was thinking that some owners have more money than sense.

Best car was the Model A Ford.

Little to go wrong, easy to repair.

Spring steel bumpers and much more.

Lifelong transport for the family.

The car primarily is a means of transport

Kind Regards....

Re: What's The Tackiest Aftermarket Add-On?

Yep, would have to say the bull balls and curb feelers are the worst.

A couple of honorable mentions:

Spinning propeller in the hitch receiver.

Ladder rack style rear air wings, you know the ones that are mounted on truss like risers, 36" off of the rear deck of a Neon.

FLASHBACK - Anyone remember the 1981 John Carpenter movie "Escape from New York"?

Kurt Russel starred as "Snake Plisskin".

Snake was up against the gang leader "Duke", (Issac Hayes) in an effort to rescue the US President (Donald Pleasence), had a late 70's Caddy CDV with chandeliers hanging off the sides of each of the front fenders?

Now that's classy!!

A movie review site - did a Google search on the movie title, and looked at about three sites before I found it. Didn't save the search, but it was on the first page of results. That is to "gaudy" as Godzilla is to iguanas!

Kinda like the Bull Nads, they give me a lift every time I see them but then I did have a small farm and several pet bulls over the years. (We ate them, the bulls that is.) Tackiest add on has to be the spoiler. Face it folks you aren't going to drive fast enough to need a spoiler. The don't do anything at 30 to 40 mph where you are going to spend 99% of your driving time. All they accomplish is to block your vision and attract the police.

There is a fascinating 1992 documentary about Americans and their customized cars called "Wild Wheels", by Harrod Blank.

As one reviewer puts it:

"This is a fascinating documentary about customized cars. I don't mean having flames painted on the side or those neon lights on the underside.

Nope. We're talkin' full lawns growing on the cars, small multi-colored mirrors covering the chassis, and a number of other oddities that will make you seriously question the sanity of the cars' owners and the role of the automobile as a statement of individuality - in that order, as the film progresses. An excellent film. (9 out of 10)"

One car owner has the skyline of Manhattan on his roof. Fascinating stuff.

Has anyone else seen it?

OK, some parts are acceptable...but the fairing behind the front wheel, the tank, the seat, the rear fender...all but the running gear, basically, needs help! It may be pleasing to ride, but not to look at.

I believe this was in the periodical called "Farm Show".

A bi-monthly, farmers (engineering) mag that has some of the most bizarre stuff you can imagine. Basically if you can think of it, some farmers probably already built it.

Yes I'm a subscriber! http://www.farmshow.com/

I actually saw this one outside of Mobile, AL.

A true testament to "high plains engineering" (hillbilly ingenuity).

Aside from the fact that it really was made out of 2X4's, they did a very good job and it really did work.

I still went away with that nagging question "WHY?"

Del, you would love to see this...

No idea, but if you did run into termites, you'd lose mass and gain methane you could use for auxilliary fuel, so it could get pretty good...for a little while, anyway!

Yeh, Imagine if you had to stop at a red light while a swarm of termites were waiting to cross the road

Oh, yeah, that's not only tacky, it can be dangerous! I had a friend that added stack pipes like a big rig but didn't put guards around them. I didn't know they weren't just a pipe bed rack, and jumped on the back grabbing one for a handhold. In about 1 second, I had 2nd degree burns to the palm and fingers of my hand. That was back in the mid-70's, and I still remember how much it hurt!

I just remembered one of my favorite movie vehicles, and it's pretty tacky. That being said, I would probably still willingly ride around in it.

Behold...

The movie is "Dumb and Dumber" for those of you who aren't familiar with it.

Hmmm...a calico car!

Were you aware of this? Effective October 1, 2001, the calico cat became the official cat of Maryland (Chapter 194, Acts of 2001; Code State Government Article, sec. 13-317). Its colors of orange, black, and white are shared with the Baltimore oriole (State bird) and the Baltimore Checkerspot butterfly (State insect).

Probably Wal-mart spinners haha.

However, you can find some great aftermarket parts like projector headlights and tail lights at carpartscentral.com

That's where I got mine, quality parts for reasonable prices!
