Can You Feel Emotions for a Robot?

Posted October 24, 2008 8:00 AM

If you haven't already, check out this BigDog Video. The robot really looks and acts like an animal, which brings up some interesting questions. Did you wince when the fellow kicks it? Be honest... As service robots become more of a reality, will the people they care for develop an emotional attachment? Is this a good thing, or bad?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Robotics Systems, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Robotics Systems today.

People can definitely get attached to robots and as robots become more and more "human like" the attachment will only grow.

Toasters have feelings too!

Most people have an emotional relationship with inanimate objects, most of us love our cars, coffee makers, xbox and so on...

As for me i feel very deeply for my new Trimble VX, spatial total station with robotics. not only does it make my life easier but i feel if i ever lost it i would not know how to conduct myself, i would shed a tear for sure....

If your servicing one and don't have lock it out, and it begins going through its work sequeced, and you in its way.

Pissed, rage and fighting for you life (fear) is a an emotion

No wincing what so ever. In fact, my first reaction was how well the machine reacted to the impulse. Impressive work.

How many of you have had sentimental feelings for your car? Be honest now. When you had to get rid of it were you sad? If you can get attached to something that caused you so much frustration and wallet leaks, how much more attached will you be when the frustrating wallet leaking item can interact with you?
