What Kind of Robots Do You Prefer?

Posted November 24, 2008 8:42 AM

What's your robot preference: R2D2 or C3PO? It's common thinking that Europeans and North Americans prefer robots that look like… well, robots (think R2D2), while those from Asia favor humanoid designs (think C3PO). That's partially why the Japanese have robotic receptionists and the Americans have Roombas. What are the ramifications of this divide in robot strategy, if any?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Robotics Systems, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Robotics Systems today.

It's still very hush-hush. vermin has been working on a 100 amp variable-voltage power supply and, in case of mechanical lock-up, Del suggested an emergency battery slot, but I'm not sure I want to go there ! I'm just happy to be used on the test bed.

Mick assured me that this is indeed the case and suggested that if you stroll past that house with the bad roof, the man with the hammer will address your concerns about the missing smiley in Morse code. Walk slowly, don't make any sudden moves and give him the Secret Sign.

Wasn't she featured in an advert for American Can Company? Years and years ago? Like in the 80s? That animation was impressive, to say the least. Particularly for the level of CGI they had then.

Hey Epke,

Are you interested in digital art?

A Swedish friend of mine is a digital artist (he does 2D, 3D and animation). His award-winning works have been featured on TV (primarily in Malaysia, where he lived for awhile), in video games and in film. His specialty is computer-animated 'talent.' Step aside Hollywood! Your days are numbered! You can see many examples of his formidable talents here.

A few teasers...

Here is an animated 'actress' for a Malaysian government TV advert...

Ms. Flamethrower...

His famous Monobike...

"One Last Time" ...

"The Pet" (1997)...

"The Price of Magic"...

"Promise"...

(Below) The cover for Peter Ratner's book on modeling humans. This is not a photograph of a real person. Steven created most of these images using Autodesk's Maya.

Cheers!

Yeah, you can say that again.

I stopped by Steven's flat one day when he lived here in Austin, and we played around with a 'wireframe' model of a girl. It was fun to 'grab' different parts of figure with the cursor and pull them this way and that with some pretty funny results! (Send me a PM, Kris, for more details ). After we finished making suitable adjustments, he rendered the model. It was amazing and funny as hell.

This, btw, is a wireframe model of the girl on the stool ...

Of course a robot should look like a robot. But to look at popular culture recently, take for instance the movie Wall-e. I liked the look of Wall-e better than Eve. He's got features that stand out. Plus, who doesn't love tracks for locomotion? Actually, though, I think I mostly prefer robots that are yellow with black stripes that I never have to see, since they just work together all day long freeing humans from the drudgery and hazards of industrial factory labor.

I think robots look is not important. I don't mind, If I'd have to choose one the selection criteria would be the performance characteristics, not the look (I'm too old to play that game of "my robot is nicer than yours")

But even I'm European, between R2D2 and C3PO, I would choose R2D2. I would only allow a C3PO model if it had a "mute" control.

Kind regards

But I'd still insist on that mute button, even if I had to attach it with duct tape.
