Stress May Make You Itch

Posted October 27, 2008 10:19 AM

From ScienceDaily: Latest Science News:

Current research suggests that stress may activate immune cells in your skin, resulting in inflammatory skin disease. Skin provides the first level of defense to infection, serving not only as a physical barrier, but also as a site for white blood cells to attack invading bacteria and viruses. The immune cells in skin can over-react, however, resulting in inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.

I wonder how many times dermatologists (the highest paid physicians in the US) are really addressing issues of stress?

What, no money in that. Here take this pill and use this cream. If we cure the cause we can't treat the symptoms. No long term profits from the cure.

How many Doctors take nutrition?(it is an elective) When damaged the body can't heal itself if it doesn't have the building blocks to do it with. No amount of a drug will replace a mineral, enzyme, vitamin or hormone if there is nothing to produce it from.

I would guess the Dermatologists are taught that stress is a trigger not a cause.

Doctors and Attorneys get a licence to practice not perform.

The skin replacement system is extremely well designed.

The living membrane is normally insulated from the outside world by 2 years skin production, glued together with skin grease.

Each cell as it migrates towards the outside world just as it leaves the live membrane, has the cell contents extracted for re-use, and the individual skin cell collapses from it's normal drum shape to a flat packed tiny scale looking like dust.

The skin grease coats the dead skin cells, thus insulating the live membrane from damage.

Skin sensors are hot, cold, pressure and pain, and in certain medical conditions such as PRP (pityriasis rubra pilaris) all the dead skin may fall off, leaving the live membrane exposed all over the body, thus all the four types of sensors are switched on 24/7 and generally the sensory overload causes the sufferer to do the header from the balcony onto the concrete below.

Having had a personal miracle for full recovery from that horrible condition, after being written off by the medical profession, I am still amazed at the clever design of the skin, which repels boarders, waterproofs the live membrane, re-uses all possible cell contents and more.

Kind Regards....

Hey Sparkster,

Any idea for the cause of your recovery? It seems to run in my family. (Dad and his brothers) They get it on their shins.

They use a cream they swear by that treats the symptom.

Absolutely true. My skin itches when I am stressed and has done for many years off and on. Years ago I was told it was neurodermatitis and prescribed 1% cortisone cream. My skin rashes come and go according to how well I acknowledge my stress and deal with it.

I firmly believe in the body showing what the psyche cannot handle, as a sort of wake up call and distress signal. As a psychologist I treat people who express their suffering in these ways. Clients often come with symptoms including skin breakouts when they are undergoing severe stress brought on my relationship problems that they can't solve. That is after all what stress is - an overload that is unmanageable.

I have a quiz for people who want to know if their bodies are speaking their anxiety and stress on my website. You can find it at http://www.drjeanetteraymond.com

Itching is annoying and embarrasing to say the least. You are so aware of what your skin looks and feels like that you imagine everyone else is homing in on it too.

One man I know itches so much on his leg just above his ankle that he makes it bleed. He seems to scratch and scratch and feel relief once the blood comes. His stress comes from fear that he is going to be judged, and it raises his anxiety sky high. One way he gets relief is to push the anxiety into his body, specifically his leg and scratch it away. It works for him.

How do you cope with difficult and uncomfortable emotions that overwhelm you? Looking forward to getting your opinions.

Thanks for the warm welcome Brad.

Red, raw rashes can be a signal of anger that comes from having to make impossible choices. When the conflict runs high, it's often an overwhelming task to opt for one or another side. The skin our largest organ speaks the conflict in it's red color of anger and the itch says how awful it is to have the unresolved conflict.

Creams and lotions may dampen down the discomfort, but does nothing to solve the conflict. I'd be interested to hear about conflicts any one has out there that appear insurmountable.

Look forward to more comments.

dr. jeanette;

as with Brad, welcome.........and after looking at your web site and your background, you may have stirred something up that some engineers have.
