In Japan, a Billboard That Watches You

Posted December 16, 2008 9:00 AM

From Slashdot:

At a Tokyo railway station above a flat-panel display hawking DVDs and books sits a small camera hooked up to some image processing software. When trials begin in January the camera will scan travelers to see how many of them are taking note of the panel, in part of a technology test being run by NTT Communications. It doesn't seek to identify individuals, but it will attempt to figure out how many of the people standing in front of an advertisement are actually looking at it.

Slippery slope.

Next such signs will identify who is looking at them. And then inundate your e-mail and snail-mail with ads and offers.

And for those who consciously stop looking at such signs...the punishments will begin.

Sounds like all the basic components required for a servo loop. Just think, self tuning marketing. Truly a frightening concept!

Remember the interactive advertisments in Minority Report (2002)? At one point in the movie the Tom Cruise character (John Anderton), on the run, is confronted by an American Express ad that says, "It looks like you need an escape, and Blue can take you there."

I don't want to sound like a religious fanatic, maybe that was God talking...........though it was only a movie, I'm sure people experienced that.

uuhhhm, or coincidence?

Your post seems disingenuous, is there a problem?

Your post seems disingenuous, is there a problem?

rather long story so I'll cut it short.

Like most people I went through allot of issues in a very short time. Health Issues, Lost Business, later uncovered that was due to corrupt employees, Government Intervention due to the employees, attorneys who could cleared it up in a very short time but did'nt and choose to buddy up, professional and person fiscal problems, the list goes on.......I repeat all in a very short time, of about 1 year.

I'm not a very religious man, but at those times my life seem very bleak, I talked to my dad, and he just mentioned may be you should go to church. Damnest thing, the sermon rather directly addressed my problem at the time.

I know that there are coincidences, but when there is a consistence number of them, one tends, which I do believe there is more at work here.

And being an engineer, I rely on proof, the conflict I have is when one has enough of these coincidences, it makes you reflect.

I guess because of the conflict, it did come out as disingenuous.

Very observation, TeslaFan.
