Wii-Controlled Robots Made for Combat

Posted December 19, 2008 9:31 AM

From Discovery News Top Stories : Discovery Channel:

Will the next generation of autonomous army bots be Wii-mote controlled? For kids, a new way to control virtual characters is all fun and games. For soldiers, more intuitive controls for robots could mean the difference between life and death. Using the controller from the popular Nintendo Wii gaming system (the "Wiimote") scientists from the Idaho National Laboratory, working with engineers from the U.S. Army, Foster-Miller, and iRobot, are developing novel ways to control military robots. "If a soldier wants to find a bomb [with a robot], 95 percent of their attention has to be focused on the screen," said Doug Few, an engineer at the Idaho National Laboratory working on the project. "Using the Wii remote reduces the work load on the operator and also extends the numbers of domains that the robot can be used in." The current laptop interface that controls the military robots can have up to 50 hard buttons and requires a soldier to place all attention to the monitor, a potentially deadly distraction in a war zone.

I would enlist in a heart beat if they made a new branch in the military: Mechanized Mobile Suit Infantry, I dont care if Im running a robot, or if Im in it myself, SUPER Soldier! Who will do it first, Japanese or U.S.?? The germans and russians are contendors but i think China will utilize it best... They have the resources and the labor and a billion ppl to make a mechanized army. not to mention they have a head start on us over there with the asimo. Its only a matter of time before the technology age of the new millenium catches up in the battle field.

Excuse me, Asimo is Japanese, NOT Chinese.

We haven't got to the stage where we're crediting the Chinese with having made the stuff they've stolen have we?

"scientists from the Idaho National Laboratory, working with engineers from the U.S. Army"

Why would the dumb scientists from the Idaho National Laboratory, working with engineers from the U.S. Army tell the Chinese about this anyway?

Can't the US develop ANYTHING in secret, without telling the whole world about it?

Or is their ego so badly bruised and looking for plaudits from anywhere and anyone that they got to spout to the enemy what they're doing all the time?

Are they or aren't they.

A proposal suggested I believe in the Nixon Admin. for National security is to release all sensitive information and make it available.

The thought behind that is, take the Russians at that time, They would expend allot of resources to verify it, and they would crumble..........uuhhmmm!

Can't the US develop ANYTHING in secret, without telling the whole world about it?

Do you know something the rest of us don't, or maybe they can keep a secret.
