Breakthroughs That Will Change Everything

Posted January 04, 2009 8:27 AM

From Yahoo! News: Science News:

Will humans go extinct? Or will we instead evolve into divergent species? Can we stop killing each other? Perhaps old-fashioned wisdom will return and save the day. These are just some of the compelling thoughts generated when the forward-thinking Edge Foundation recently asked scientists, authors, futurists, journalists and other offbeat thinkers the question: "What will change everything?" To refine the question, Edge further asked: "What game-changing scientific ideas and developments do you expect to live to see?" Among the dozens of responses, from such diverse sources as Alan Alda (actor and now TV science personality) to Ian Wilmut (cloned Dolly the sheep), LiveScience picked out five, each notable for its ingenuity and ability to provoke thought. Evolution of New Human Species Juan Enriquez, CEO of Biotechonomy and founding director of Harvard Business School's Life Sciences Project and author of "The Untied States of America"

Traditionally, humans are Workers and Warriors. In the beginning, we worked, and warred for the gods. For the last 2500 years or so, we have worked and warred for ourselves. Now we face the serious threat of overpopulation. As 98% of the people are sheep, and the other 2% are control freaks or worse.. it doesn't look good. It could go either way..

With ever decreasing resources of food, lumber, hydrocarbons, fresh air, clean water, and living space, and an overabundance of killing weapons, I predict global war. when the bloodbath is done, if there is anything left growing, and any people left, then the species may continue.

If any portion of the species manages to colonize off planet, then also there it may continue. but I'm pretty sure that billions of people are going to die in a great conflagration. It seems most probable.

The advent of reliance on renewable enegy sources (such as solar) instead of fossil fuels would change the way we do business in so many ways - and I am hopeful that we are on the verge of that breakthrough. Petroleum, for instance, is so much more valuable as feedstock for chemical syntheses than as fuel to get down to the mall for the red tag sales.

Here's a thought.... In stead of spending billions fighting wars to gain power over oil reserves, why don't we spend billions to gain control of the oxygen reserves. With what was spent in the middle east blowing crap up it wouldn't surprise me that we could have peacefully purchased the entire African continents rainforests.
