Microsoft Releases Windows 7 Beta as a Free Download

Posted January 08, 2009 8:44 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

Microsoft's excitable CEO Steve Ballmer showed off Windows 7 -- the slick, fast, user-friendly successor to the much-maligned Windows Vista -- and said it will be available as a public beta on Friday. Unveiled by an intense Ballmer during his keynote address on the eve of CES 2009, Windows 7 will offer better performance on underpowered machines such as netbooks, support for multitouch interfaces, and simplified home networking.

Microsoft Beta versions were always free, but they have a built in "Timeout" function, that stops them working after a specific date.

Sometimes, an update to the final version has been offered at a reduced cost to these "Beta-Testers".

Some people like to run "Just 4 Fun" these Beta versions and get to know them, but never ever run serious stuff on them, its simply too dangerous.....either as a seperate partition or on a seperate PC.

You hook the junkie by giving him his first hit for free.

Down on the street, when the junkies find out that the junk they've been sold is bad they sometimes put the dealer "out of business". Permanent like.

The only thing saving Microsoft's skin is that it's the only dealer in town.

"The only thing saving Microsoft's skin is that it's the only dealer in town."

That's what they'd like us to believe, but nothing could be further from the truth. There is Linux and its derivatives which are slowly but surely gaining ground and have been doing so for some time now. Google the Halloween Papers for a look at an internal M$ memo leaked some time ago. Linux is a significant threat, and they want to squash it. Microsoft detests any kind of open software, and Linux is at the forefront.

Things have gotten worse for M$ since the HP were released, especially where servers are concerned. Many corporations are migrating to linux for their servers mainly because of M$' poor track record in terms of reliability.

Another drawback M$ faces is the fact that Windows and its derivatives are not particularly scalable. Linux, OTOH, runs on everything from single-chip web servers to giant supercomputer clusters - and everything else in between.

M$ is not the only game in town and they know it.

Yeah, but the guys dealing Linux just hand you a brown paper bag containing ingredients. Even if you're smart enough to know how to mix 'em up, sometimes you get a good high, sometimes a bad one. Sometimes you get nothin' at all.

But you're right. When Linux is good, it's soooooo good. No bugs crawling outta your monitor. And you got enough cash left over so that you don't need to steal stuff anymore to save up for that MacBook you really crave.

I use Kubuntu linux. Not brown bag at all. More like Red Velvet Cake at a five-star restaurant.

And I have a Mac. And I use WinXP for apps that haven't been ported to the other OSes. But I like Kubuntu best of all.

Btw, Apple's OS-X is based on a Berkely-ish *nix. I'm not real crazy about OS-X.

I now have 12 computers, total. Two run 'Doze, one runs OS-X and the rest of 'em run Kubuntu. Eight of my Kubuntu boxes act as render servers for my ray-tracing software..

I ran linux years ago when it was a little more cumbersome. I'd like to go back to it because I'm about to set up a network for 5 or 6 computers at home. Any suggestions to where to start?

They claim it's "...slick, fast, user-friendly..." well, two out of three ain't bad, as they say. Wonder which two we'll get from MiniSquishy this time around?

The Windows 7 beta has been available for over a month on torrents so the bad guys have already started hole searching. Not long and the next viral malwar will be on. Just not enough 7 users to make any infestations worth while yet.

Who knows it may do what it is suppose to do. Or do they already?

If you're migrating from WinXP to SevWin, good luck finding drivers for your stuff. Word on the street is that SevWin is just a glorified Vista upgrade, may it burn in smegging Hell.

So instead of a series of "patches" like they did with XP, they're just "fixing" what ain't right with Vista and calling it an upgrade? That sounds like a typical MiniSquishy trick, all right! Money grubbers!

Now I am not just promoting MS stuff, but a recent test of Win7 against WinXP Pro and Vista showed clearly that it will/should be better than both.

In the test Win7 was first, XP second and Vista a way behind last!!!

Which probably means for me that once it is about 2 to 3 years old, I may buy it..... Just like I did with XP Pro......(I would not give XP Home house room! And Vista was easily seen to be complete rubbish from day 1!! For serious nusers at least with a lot of wide ranging and expensive software.....)
