Can Gadgets Help You Quit Smoking?

Posted January 30, 2009 9:08 AM

From Wired Top Stories:

When you're a smoker, quitting is tough. Can high-tech gadgetry make it any easier? I'm Charlie, and I'm addicted to cigarettes. That is, I believe, the way to start talking about a problem. Why am I telling you? Because I'm giving up. Of course, wuss that I am, I'm not going cold turkey. I shall enlist the power of technology to help. Here's a list of the gadgets I will rely on in the coming weeks. The photo, by the way, shows one of Brazil's rather scary anti-smoking warnings. This one concerns the ability of cigarettes to cause impotence.

Nothing but your own desire to quit will help you quit. Gadgets can help for a while but you will likely go back. It is all your own willpower and timing.

Sitting on a comfortable recliner inside a large vacuum chamber has been shown to be especially helpful. Especially after first filling the chamber with pure oxygen.

see if your doctor will give you Valium. My friend who quit got that. No doctor I know will give it to me. Doesn't make you crazy, but it is a twelve step thing.

This is what you do:

don't inhale through your mouth but through your nostrils. Close one nostril with a finger and put the cigarette in the other. Now suck with your nose. Well yes, try it now. You see, it is not funny is it? If you do this only to get the nicotine hit you will stop. I am a smoker and still enjoy it. I would try, what I suggested, if I really wanted to quit. Some people stuck in traffic jams are more in danger of causing health problems for them and others than smoking tobacco.

High tech? To stop an addiction? Not sure Mate. Pain and discomfort will work better any day. Ky.

PS: it hurts, doesn't it?

Hi my friend, I'm Kwetz and I'm a smoker....

It's one year from I smoked my last cigarette. I've tried to quit many, many times with different results, sometimes I could stand some weeks, sometimes some days, and even two years the longest time.

And you know the "common mode failure root cause" of all those tries?

Quite simple: Weak mind

I quited smoking in fact but I remain thinking in smoking, I really like it.

Gadgets? If you haven't enough mind power... definitely NOT

Do you buy anything you see on a wall/TV advertisement just because it promises you to be taller, richer or whatever they promise?

I didn't quit smoke even when the doctor told me I had a kidney cancer and after I lost my left one!!!

Just to stop to think, search medical support and change your "way of life" may result.

Kind regards and never give up!

Re: Can Gadgets Help You Quit Smoking?

Good luck to you Charlie, but I don't think a fist full of crutches will help. They can help the physical aspects of withdrawal, but the real issue is getting your mind to quit. As I'm a smoker, you may want to ignore my points, but on the other hand I can see the difficulty from your point of view. I simply don't want to quit - I enjoy it, end of. Life is full of pleasure/danger choices.

One time I tried quitting because somebody badgered me into it. Bad idea - That was doomed to failure. I've noticed that if I'm physically busy I don't even think about stopping for a fag. I've worked in places where you can't have a fag (this is pre workplace ban, though in places where it's simply not allowed - it would screw computer systems or blow everybody up), and not missed it when busy. 'Hand feel' and routine are major factors for me - a coffee with my first coffee is as ingrained in my head as getting home from a pub on auto pilot after one too many.

Best I can think of is change routine, find something to do with your hands (no, not that, europium !), and avoid things you associate with having a fag (oh dear, it could be that again !). Be aware that you'll be tetchy for a while initially, so cut yourself (and others) a little slack by treating yourself to something else. Nicotine dosing devices may help, but personally I wouldn't bother. Diazepam is widely regarded as more addictive then fags and many other drugs. I could ramble on with other 'methods', but ultimately the answer is inside your own head. All that paraphernalia, pledges, steps and whatever will only serve to put one thought in your head ; "Cigarette". You can't avoid being reminded, but you can psych yourself into thinking "It matters not to me - I've made my own choice to quit"

There are other stop-smoking aids, but I'll leave that (unless you really want it) because IMHO the battle is in your own head. Praise and encouragement are nice, but might serve to leave you feeling boxed into a corner, as if you're obligated to others and would be letting them down by smoking again. Focus on your own reasons for quitting. It's one of those instances where being selfish (in a purely literal sense) will help others. You know your own mind best, and can figure what will work for you best.

Good luck to you, whichever path you choose.

"...a coffee with my first coffee..."

Which one's first? Is one for contingencies or do you sip them alternately? With both paws busy do you hold the fag in your mouth? I was just wondering whether that was a wax job or are those simply burnt whiskers?

I alternate - snorting coffee is so much more fun, though it does pay to filter out the grounds first. Ive yet to be persuaded that the Californian method has any merit, but it would be hellish funny to ask in Starbucks ! "Look, just hook this tube up to the slop machine and I'll do the rest myself. Crank up the pressure and I can probably serve for you as well".

Hair dryer/blow-torch, it's an easy mistake to make......

Re: Can Gadgets Help You Quit Smoking?

Hi. Anybody can quit smoking if you really want to. Using gadgets, well, it worked for me. I smoked for 22 years and one evening became very aware of weezing in my chest. Deciding it is time to stop or die, I stopped. At our local chemist they sell stuff called Quit. 4 Little spray bottles in a box. Pending on how much you smoked a day would determine with which bottle to start. 1 strongest, 4 weakest. I started with bottle two as it tasted really sh*t. But, everytime you REALLY crave for a siggie, you spray one spray in your mouth. Long story short, I used half of 2 and half of 3, never got to 4. I still think it works with your mind and does not really help you stop, but the comfort is there that you have something with you when you need a "fix". I have not smoked for 6 years now. Made it a point not to touch one ever again, not even a dead one lying around on the ground. I don't let anyone smoke in my house. I have no more weezing or breathing problems since the 4th week of stopping. Stop, it's worth it. You don't smell anymore (believe me a smoker stinks). Your house doesn't smell anymore. You can actually taste food (be very carefull though because the kilo' pile on quick). Good luck.

"Made it a point not to touch one ever again, not even a dead one lying around on the ground."

There was a sign in the men's room at a truckstop in Julesberg, Colorado. It read:

"Please do not throw cigarette butts in the urinal. It makes them soggy and hard to light."

I can't stand it when someone smokes and just throw it on the floor, stand on it and leave it there for you to pick up, or just shoot it into my garden. Some people will just dump/empty their car ashtray next to the side of the road. What about flicking it out of the window while driving, covering the car behind you in sparks as it hits? Worse, I think, is when we have a braai (barbie, BBQ) the smoker will just shoot his finished sigarette into the fire as I am grilling some meat. I always have an ashtray near for outdoor users and they clean it before they leave. Once you stop you only realise how crap smoking really is.

All prefectly good points, Conrads, that's all stuff that annoys me too. But......what of the person on the bicycle, behind the car with exhaust, behind the cigarrete chucking driver ? Maybe the car exhaust fumes should be vented thru the occupants space, before hitting anyone elses face ?

Kris

Yes my fury friend that was my point earlier on. I had my daughter in law and my grand children over on the Island. She will not have me smoke in my own house and I agreed to respect her wishes considering there are little humans involved. I was the bloke in my garden shed puffing away and feeling quite ridiculous.

One day she started up the car's engine and air con before leaving (it was very hot) and the fumes went straight into my Studio/work shop. It was unbearable and I had to leave. I made no big deal about it at the time and will consider mentioning it one day, when the time is right. You don't want your son in trouble, do you? She is a fully blown psychologist with a high position at JCU so care has to be taken' without rocking the boat.

Like I said, there are other ways to pollute your body than smoking. I keep finding excuses and instead should just give it away. But then again, there are so many other "impurities" that can and will harm us during our time on this Planet.

I will mention another pet hate of mine which is chlorinated water. Even as a young student 40 years ago I refused to take part in swimming exercises because the presence of chlorine gas, just hovering above the water. The teacher way back then regarded my concerns as fair enough to be excused. Imagine all the unrecognized damage fully training youngsters could potentially receive while training. To the best of my knowledge they still are subjected to the same. Drinking chlorinated water is nothing compared to what chlorine can do to developing, highly performing youngsters lunges. Breathing chlorine gas at full capacity levels!!! I wonder if any studies have been done on the subject, or, if the "cartel" has just kept it quiet?

My sisters mother in law, who never smoked a cigarette in her life, died of lung cancer. She went swimming in her indoors pool every day to stay fit. She was only 52 and had the best doctors available at the time in Germany. She had 3 months notice and never saw a grand child.

Well, I shall give the fags away one day and I hope it is sooner than later. My willpower is on normal levels and could use a boost. It is costing money that could be spent on books for the kids. I got it, that's it, I'll give up tomorrow, he said.

But then, he says a lot during a decision making day. Have fun, Ky.

Hi Ky. I must just tell you this much. When I stopped smoking I also thought I would see money because to smoke cost a fortune. Wrong. I don't know where it goes but you don't see anything, and I smoked a pack a day (30). Somehow you just always have money for smokes and once you stop the money is gone toooooooo .

Thanks for the detailed post, ky.

There were just soooo many comparisons to choose from, but cars seemed like a good target. Smoking's a real nasty habit, but I'l be damned if I'll let the UK morality fascists bully me into quitting. Keeping fit is quite laudable, though I've never seen a happy looking jogger, and big pharmas just love the yuppie vitamin market. Getting an MRI scan or similar is becoming a norm, 'just in case' the docs can find anything. Look hard enough, and most people will find something to worry themselves to death over.
