Nuke Your Tumors! Surgeons Use Microwaves to Zap Cancer

Posted February 06, 2009 9:18 AM

From Discover Magazine | RSS:

Using microwaves to cook food was sooo yesterday. These days, microwaves can do nearly anything. Scientists are using them to kill off marine life, and police might soon use guns that shoot them to stop fleeing suspects. Now, doctors are trying to use microwaves to save lives—by zapping liver cancer.

Hi,

microwaves have a long wavelength (compared to infrared and visible electromagnetic radiation) and focusing sharpness is proportional to wavelength.

So it is not a good idea to heat a lot of surrounding tissue.

You will either damage healthy tissue or kill not all cancer cells.

The approach is not new, systems with small intruding antennas are known since nearly 10 years but never gained a many applications.

Same with high intensity ultrasonics, better than microwaves but still not good.

In test now: attaching magnetic particles to the cancer cells and heat these by RF.

This is used (search for USPIO at Nimwegen, Netherlands, Prof Barentsz and Advanced Magnetics) for treatment and diagnostics of cancer in early trials. This is much better as selective heating is done.
