Electric Motorcycles at 150-mph

Posted February 18, 2009 12:01 AM by CarDomain

Mission Motors, founded by a former Tesla Motors engineer, plans to sell a limited run of 50 of these electric super bikes next year. Powered by a 3-phase AC induction motor and a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery, the bike has a range of 150 miles and a claimed top speed of 150 mph. A recharge takes two hours at 240 volts and eight hours at 120 volts.

The problem is they are more dangerous then your typical combustible engine motorcycles. The can go from 0 to full speed in a matter of seconds and stop more suddenly then the gradual speed control of a combustible engine vehicle of any kind.

That touchiness with velocity will get people killed alone then add that to your usual types of motorcycle accidents.

I would only hope it comes with an array of features like traction control and throttle restrictions to prevent an accidental twist of the wrist giving one an under 3 second zero to dead experience.

On the other hand, putting one of these things on a track with an experienced rider such as our hero Valentino, and pitting it against gas powered bikes should prove the "awesomeness" of electric power.

I reviewed an electric off-road motorcycle at the local show a few weeks ago. It raced a comparative ICE bike and I was impressed. But at almost four times the cost of the bike it raced it just seemed ridiculous. Especially with the 2-4 hr riding time between charges.

It may be an interesting race class bike, but as a fun riding bike it will be left in the dust very quickly.

Riding a motorcycle at 150 MPH is complete and total insanity.
