Show Time Again, but for Who?

Posted February 23, 2009 8:08 AM

In the U.S., it will soon be show time for the machine tool industry. The bandwagon starts off later this month with Westec, to be followed by Eastec in May and later, in October, South-Tec. But will anyone be buying, and if so what? Will your company be cutting back on spending or will it be looking to use reserves to re-equip itself with the technology to counter recession?

I wasn't aware that we still had a machine tool industry. I don't think anyone makes machine tools here anymore. So what are they taking orders for? Imported tools from China, Korea and Taiwan? Names that were prominant among U.S. tool makers, like Monarch, LaBlond, Gisholt, Niles, South Bend, Sheldon, Brown and Sharpe were but a few of the hundreds of machine tool makers that built our industrial base and no longer exist.
