New Form of "Mobius" Carbon Predicted

Posted March 17, 2009 8:35 AM

From Slashdot:

We've seen carbon nanotubes, buckyballs, and chickenwire. Now materials scientists have created a computer model of a Mobius strip fashioned from strips of graphene — a molecule that would have a single surface and only one edge. (Other groups have made Mobius-like organic molecules but never out of carbon sheets.) The model allows the researchers to determine the physical and chemical properties of the molecules and how these depend on the number of twists in the strip. The team says, for example, that 'Mobius carbon' should be stable to temperatures of at least 500 Kelvin (abstract). But the most exciting prediction is that strips with an odd number of half twists should have a dipole moment that would cause them to self-organize into a crystal.

Look at this emblem:

Why so complicated. A doughnut can do the job with out an edge at all. A Pretzel, the child of a doughnut, does the same.

self-organize into a crystal.

I would rather have a chain of "one surface rings" than any edgy bits. Well, I know Eff' n all about it, so I better leave it to the participants "in the know", to do the deed, Ky.

PS: I tried to insert the image and lost 200 words of instant reply in the process. I am keeping those lost minutes to my self at the moment.

Lets build a chain of doughnuts!

Hope all goes well, Ky.

"A wise mathematician confided

That a Mobius strip is one sided.

You get quite a laugh

When you cut it in half

For it stays in one piece when divided." - Anon
