Here care the twelve steps (such as they are):

  1. Sometimes a snapshot is the best you can do in a busy environment where people lack the patience to pose for you, but with a little effort, you may be able to come back with an image much better than a casual snapshot.
  2. Try to converse with your subjects and find out who they are and what is important to them. A little dialog can go a long way toward getting subjects to relax.

3. One way to hone your photographic skills is to keep going back to the same location. Try different angles and different perspective. Shoot at different times of day, different seasons and different weather conditions. You might be amazed at the new images you can capture by "working" the same site.

  1. Before using your camera, make sure that your batteries are charged and that you have enough memory capacity.
  2. If you get a new piece of equipment, such as a lens or flash, test it out before using it to take important pictures.
  3. Another way to help you develop your photographic abilities is to join a local camera club, where you can meet photographers of all skill levels.
  4. Clubs often have photo contests, in which you can learn a lot about "dos and don'ts" and get tips on how to get the most out of every image.
  5. Clubs also organize photo-shoot outings, workshops and other enjoyable activities.
  6. There is, of course, a wealth of magazines, instructional guides, photo sites, workshops and other resources to turn to for advice.
  7. See "A Library Of Digital Photography Resources" for some of this author's favorites
  8. Your camera's manufacturer probably has a pretty good Web site too with self-help tips, online manuals, additional software tools and software updates for both your camera and the manufacturer's image-manipulating software.
  9. Finally, here's the best single piece of photographic advice I've heard: If you want to take interesting pictures, go to interesting places."

Rules for success as a photographer are: if you can't make it small, and in Black and White, Make it large and in Black and White, and if you can't make it in Large and in Black and White, make it huge and in Color. Generally Closeups are more successful than long shots.
