Should Web Privacy be Guaranteed?

Posted April 10, 2009 8:24 AM

In the article "Will Noise Protect Web Surfers' IDs?" appearing in the April 2009 issue of Acoustics & Audio Technology, "provable privacy" for Web surfers can be imparted to all by adding noise to search-engine records. If you could, would you opt for guaranteed privacy? Given the rampant identity theft and other fraud on the Internet, do you think that this would make your personal information more secure?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Acoustics & Audio Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Acoustics & Audio Technology today.

Much like walking down the streets of London, you gave up your expectation of privacy on the net the moment you log on.

There is no "guaranteed privacy", nor is it possible in this day.

(Well, you might go hunting in a remote area with a trusted friend, but we all know how that might turn out. Thanks for the cultural reference Dick! )

At best you might gain some privacy via Privoxy, Tor and Freenet through a proxy chain but even that is no guarantee. As far as electronic communications go, assume your cel/email/browsing/searching habits are being logged and recorded because it can be done.

I wonder who is watching the watchers. See Sharkle's Google View thread for more on this topic.
