Doctor Attempts to Clone People

Posted April 23, 2009 8:57 AM

From Scientific American:

A controversial fertility doctor today told British reporters that he has cloned 14 human embryos and transferred 11 of them into the uteruses of four women. The physician, Panayiotis Zavos, who operates fertility clinics in Kentucky and Cyprus, says none of the embryos gave rise to successful pregnancies, but he is confident that baby cloning is just around the corner, The Independent reports.

I really wished I would have logged out on this and posted anonymously.

the question I have is... to what end? what's the point? there are plenty of available reproductive options, and if you can't, through more regular methods, manage to reproduce then maybe the universe is trying to tell you something... like maybe you shouldn't breed... maybe you should adopt... perhaps your genetic make-up falls on the 'unsuccessful' side of the evolutionary scale and you should refrain from passing on this doomed gene set to some other unsuspecting soul who won't be able to reproduce... or maybe it's the planet saying 'there's already too damn many of you here and enough is enough!'... Wait, I've changed my mind... everyone who is unable to reproduce through normal means should get cloned and the rest of us should cut off/out our 'hardware' so that in a generation the only people living will be unable to reproduce if the power goes out... this strikes me as an excellent solution to our many pollution problems... We should propose this new program next Earth Day...

Personally I think Panayiotis Zavos is an irresponsible fame seeking ass, but that's just my opinion, and no, it's not theologically based.

a number of reasons

1.) with equal rights gaining ground (and that being gay rights) it would give them a chance to reproduce......

2.) most important BUT with humanitarian issues at hand, it would give a bank of compatible organ transplants

And we all have an idea what happens when diversity is limited when cloning

Gay folks can use options other then cloning already: surrogates, in-vitro etc... and if you've got the money I'm pretty sure even men can get knocked up with a little bit of medical monkey business (this is based on an article I read about 20 years ago covering the successful but terminated impregnation of a MALE gorilla, of course I don't find any current data to corroborate it, the gyst of the procedure was to implant a zygote next to the large intestine and an umbilical cord will form between the fetus and intestine to nourish the developing child)

As far as spare parts goes... is it really necessary to grow an entire human body because you need a new ear or lung or hand etc...(we'll assume that there is no 'soul' in this body as that leads straight down the humanitarian issues road); or are you suggesting that you have a second (also soul-less) self in the deep freeze like that spare VW bug in the backyard that is keeping the one in the driveway running... I would think that it would be far less expensive and time consuming to just grow the part you need when you need it... not to mention the fact that you won't have to deal with your whiny neighbors crying about that unsightly half disassembled corpse you keep around...

In short, I still see no point in this line of research except to have your name remembered in the history books...

Now if they figure out how to move that which constitutes the 'Self' into a donor body so we can live forever... well, that would be ok for me... but most of the rest of the world should be required to die at some point

well I don't know where the line is drawn as far as cloning for spare parts....but I would think stem cell research would fall under that. Which is were I was coming from humanitian issues.

Its like whats his name "the liar, pot smoking, woman chasing, draft dodging" president that stated.....depends on the diffinition of the word "is".....is

You still have the twisted mothers that would want to clone their recently deceased son so they could feel like they never lost him.... I know... it's strange, but women do strange things sometimes.
