Building Excitement No More: 5 Famous Pontiacs

Posted April 28, 2009 8:25 AM

From mental_floss Blog:

General Motors recently announced that as part of their cost-saving/restructuring plan, their 83-year-old Pontiac Motors Division would be phased out by the end of next year. The most famous is arguably KITT, from Knight Rider, which enjoyed two stints on television in the 1980s and 2000s. But so we don't have to mention David Hasselhoff by name (oops!), here's a brief recap of some famous Pontiacs.

Personally, Pontiac was never that "exciting", so this is a ho-hum moment in my mind and probably for most others as well.

The line has not, as of recent times, stood out, so this will have little negative impact. The exception would be for the phased out workers, of course.

The only tangible impact I can see is that existing "classic" Pontiac cars will probably go up in value as collectables, which is a good thing, in my mind.

My first car was a 1954 Pontiac Star Chief. I was 19 when I bought it. It was 18. This definitely was a "real car". Huge and heavy. The AM radio had a speaker that must have been at least 8 inches in diameter in the center of the dash. Had a visor, and a prism so you could see the stoplight without looking up.

The hood ornament was beautiful just by itself.

For true beauty and workmanship, look at the 1936 Pontiac Chieftain.

What a car.The photo is of a Deluxe, but the Chieftain had even more chrome.
