Google Gets Its Patent for Floating Data Center

Posted May 01, 2009 9:24 AM

From TreeHugger:

Back in September we marveled at the patent Google decided to pursue plans for a data center that would float out on the ocean, powered and cooled by the waves. Well, the company was just awarded the patent. The intention is to have a data center floating 3 to 7 miles offshore, in about 50 to 70 meters of water, where it could use the ocean's movement to harvest wave-generated power to run the servers, and sea water to cool them. Essentially, it would likely be a ship upon which modular data centers (shipping container style) are placed and hooked up to sea water-based cooling and electrical systems, and then the ship would be sent to the area in which it is needed. It'd need to come in to harbor during a storm, but other than that it'd be it's own little island of information. It sounds a bit like a modern day da Vinci sketch, but we won't put it past Google to pursue launching one of these in the very near future. Check out the full details of the patent.

Now if I designed that it would have all its mechanical/electrical components below sea level, with offices near the waterline. Shape it like an enormous ballasted fin keel, and anchor it to the sea floor. One story above and one below the waterline with Polycarbonate windows to enjoy the view. A Heliport on top, and an ocean park, with salt resistant vegetation and high enough bulwarks. Maybe a heated swimming pool. Leave it where it is for storms.

Cheap enough to do with Ferrocrete. Start the bottom on land, then float it, adding ballast as it goes 'up'. Taken to extreme, how about one a mile and a half long, with a runway on top, a city below, and a shuttle to the mainland?

Like two Irishmen walking out of a pub. It could happen! (Me grandmother was from county Cork).

Gives a whole new meaning to blowing something out of the water, if not needed or not wanted or ...........

They got a patent on it? What will the Attorneys think of next? At least they don't have to worry about being payed in this case. Maybe I should patent my idea of creating things while floating on thin air? Better not, there could be prior art.

Whattle they think of next to keep them selves busy? We should keep and stay cool with out any wave action or derivatives there off. Google seems to know that bubbles do not float for ever and to put it on water will not change or form the future of human inventiveness. Keeping a bubble for longer is delusional and child like thinking. Good luck to them but I think that patent could be used for more important things. The Attorneys got it covered, want a bet?

What a waste, Ky.

Do you think they might have to take precautions against pirates ?

Maybe they can hire Rambo or Segal to guard it using remote IP based monitoring and weapons. That way they could work from home.

Rambo and Segal, do not protect anything. They go in after the facility is seized and taken over by the pirates. Then they are called in from their remote hideaways, to do one more thing for thier country, to be drop off, where they blow everything up and escape by the hairs of their #%$$@.

ooo, I beter write this stuff down.....sounds like a block buster.

Precisely! It gets them into international waters not subject to any U.S. laws.
