Video Spy Plane on the Cheap

Posted May 06, 2009 10:03 AM by frankd20

In earlier posts I describe more advanced spy plane projects that I plan on taking on. These projects are still in the works, but I wanted to show that spy planes can be done with a range of budgets as well.

This particular plane isn't so much a DIY project as it is an "I am amazed this can be done for so cheap project". It can be yours for as little as $80 to $120, depending on the video quality you choose and if you get the plane on sale. Of course, you can spend lots more on better equipment, but the point is you can do this for quite cheap and the results are still good.

The plane I used is the "Wild Hawk", which came from Harborfreight Tools and the camera is a pen-cam from the website dealextreme.

The assembly includes sticking a cheap pen video camera recorder into a ready–to-fly Styrofoam plane; I did this by making a hole in the plane and shoving the camera into it.

Click here to see a video compilation of a few different flyovers; it's definitely the coolest part of this post.

Yes, these spy planes are very useful when conducting a war but, here in the UK they are using them to spy on the ordinary citizen!

Of course, if you have nothing to hide then thats alright says the government????? But wait a minute;........This is surely a big-brother attitude!!!!!!!

What about our privacy?

So F**k these planes, they are ruining our lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spencer.

I agree that a big brother attitude and military funded uav hi res spy planes can be a dangerous combination.

To make a low cost plane with low res video like I have done is obviously in reach of many now, although you can't do that much serious spying with one. To get long range good video quality and any real detail would cost a lot more money.

My purpose of this project was simply to add a new dimension and excitement to flying rc airplanes.

Sweet! I'm ordering some of those cameras for my planes right now! One pointing down and the second will be a tail-cam....

Suggestions:

  1. Get a buddy to build one and videotape some dog-fights...
  2. Get one of those wireless cameras and be able to fly via the tv signal...

Post some video from your plane once you get it up and running, or if you want you can write a blog about it here.

Dog fight video would be cool, if only I knew someone else with a plane, camera and some time.

I have two more advanced planes in the works, but the work is lower on the priority list than some home improvement projects. Video transmission, gps, autopilot, pan and tilt camera, and more, is a future project, that I will post whenever I finish it.

I think I've found my new favorite online electronic junk superstore!

I grabbed a cellphone jammer while I was at it...quiet theaters and classrooms, here I come!
