E.U. Fines Intel for Antitrust Violations

Posted May 26, 2009 9:10 AM

From Wash Post Tech Policy:

The world's biggest semiconductor maker yesterday was fined a record $1.45 billion by European regulators for allegedly using its dominance to edge out rivals, a decision that has cast a spotlight on similar investigations by U.S. antitrust watchdogs.

grocery stores/chains have done that all the time.......except getting kickbacks not to sell competitors items like soda. How they did this was by basically buying a premium shelf space to get the best location that some of the smaller bottlers could not afford.

Yeah, but I also watched GE try to satisfy the regulators in the EU during the Honeywell acquisition.

They basically sat back and said - "No, bring us more concessions" so you end up chasing a goal you cannot see, with no higher body to appeal to.

I wonder what would happen if Intel would boycott the EU............opens the market up to Micro Devices, but could they fill the market.

It would be bad for business on Intel's part, but 1+ billion in fines could be offset with sales.......a lot of sales

AMD couldn't touch a market that big I think.

But it would create an instant black-market, that could be a good thing for folks like us!

Let's be honest here . The EU isn't about fair trade at all ; it's about petty bureaucrats stifling competitiveness and innovation the name of fair trade in order to justify their own existence . If it were otherwise they would have ended hefty grain subsidies to inefficient, uncompetitive French farmers years ago !!!!

So Microsoft and Intel are the bench mark of fair trade? (they have rubbed their backs for a while now). At least some small competitors grievance are heard in Europe.

A boycott from Intel would not be beneficial for them as Celeron and AMD would step in to take that share. (or made in china products)

Do they even have the capacity, heck to gear up for it, the problems that would arise would be a headache, China maybe could fill the gap.............as long as your don't mind it not performing.

At last intel gets its come uppence, about time too.

Since intel started cutting pins off chips to stop people using two of them for more power in a single PC (1999 I think) I have only bought one Laptop with an intel chip and only because AMD was unable to fill a particular need at that time. (By the way, the Main Board manufacturers simulated the missing pins in on board hardware......so it brought nothing except to show what a miserable company intel is and was....

I have bought several hundred AMD PCs for companies and we have never experienced any problems whatsoever...... either with other hardware or any software.....

Also, as far as I am aware, we have also never had an AMD CPU chip go bad either......and a few would have been quite normal with that large number......

Generally speaking, AMD chips are less temperature sensitive too, this could also have a positive effect on long term reliability...

Long live AMD!!!
