Laser Bursts Balloon Inside Balloon - Death Star to be Refitted

Posted August 06, 2009 8:13 AM

From Newlaunches.com:

Now this is something we outside of the MIT would not know. You can actually pop a balloon inside a balloon by playing around with laser wavelengths. As seen in the video the wavelength of the ruby laser is transmitted through the red balloon and is absorbed by the darker balloon inside.

And the CR4 Challenge question is: "When the darker balloon bursts, does the red balloon get bigger, stay the same size, or does it get smaller?"

OK, maybe not.

It depends on the pigment of the balloon (most specifically on the mollecular or particle size of the pigment) and whether it enhances or reduces ellastic tension on the latex binder.

Laser co-inventor Arthur L. Schawlow (pic'd below) performed this widely publicised feat in 1961. Yessir, folks have been popping these for damn near 50 years.
