Coffee Can Wait. Day's First Stop Is Online

Posted August 10, 2009 11:24 AM

From NYT > Technology:

Technology has shaken up plenty of life's routines, but for many people it has completely altered the once predictable rituals at the start of the day. This is morning in America in the Internet age. After six to eight hours of network deprivation — also known as sleep — people are increasingly waking up and lunging for cellphones and laptops, sometimes even before swinging their legs to the floor and tending to more biologically urgent activities.

Well, it's just logical to check your work e-mails before getting up to go to the bathroom.

If the news is good, it makes for a more pleasant "evacuation".

If the news is bad, you pull the covers over your head and whimper for a few minutes, until the call of nature forces you deal with life and get up.

If the news is really, really bad then you're probably going to dash to the bathroom anyway in a spontaneous eruption from every orifice.

I love my Blackberry. It replaced tobacco in my life. The first thing I do in the morning is pick up my Blackberry and check the overnight mail.

Often while I am evacuating.....

Nonsense!

The coffee pot goes on before anything. Then the laptop. While that is warming up I'm hand rolling my first cigarette of the day, or draining the dragon. When both are accomplished, the coffee is set beside the laptop, the cigarette is lit, and I check the latest rants on CR4. The silly questions give me my first laugh of the day, and I'm ready for the world.
