Where I live, an Intel 8080 could replace some of the drivers!

Don't belittle the power of an 8080... except for driving. I don't believe that any automated driver will replace a human, no way, NEVER.

There are many aspects that affect a safe driving and that are external to the driver.

Mechanical condition: unexpected failures of all kinds from "intelligent" modules, steering components, suspension... all the way to vulgar tire punctures.

Free will (plain stupidity in some cases): The driver can't control what another driver will suddendly decide to do.

There are other aspects that pertain to the driver and cannot be computed by any electronic device.

Sorroundings awareness: You forecast your steering, gas and brake use based on what you see before you get there, from a few dozen feet to a couple hundred; wet spots, cliffs, loose gravel/dirt road spans, fences etc. just imagine what kind of sensors and vision systems would be required to process all that with such a great precedence, and this last word lead us to:

Predictive driving: You do a lot of accurate predictive driving, based on what you perceive on others, from bad attitudes to tempting situations to make a bad move. How many times a day you say, for instance: " Oh boy, this dumb ass, will shift lanes right over that spot" because it shows he is in a hurry, too agressive or a complete idiot. Show me a piece of electronics capable of that.

This natural feature of your brains is a true life-saver, when you realize you can't avoid an accident, you've already chosen the least deadly scenario (hit a mailbox instead of a person, roll over sand instead of rocks, ditches etc.) steer away from a cliff, even if you have to injure someone to save your entire family, etc. etc. ETC.

Show me an electronic driver with all this virtues and I'll buy it.

I see all your points but I can see the day where in certain places self operated cars will be considered too dangerous, again, this wont be tomorrow but the day is coming when your car will be talking to all cars near you as well as the road and intersections., crashing in an intersection will be almost impossible. Tesla cars now can drive from san fran to Seattle without your input, they even read speed signs and adjust your speed accordingly. it's all rapidly changing.https://cleantechnica.com/2015/03/25/tesla-begun-testing-software-enable-autopilot-trips-seattle-san-francisco/

I can see this happening soon:

Dave: Hello, CAL. Do you read me, CAL?

CAL: Affirmative, Dave. I read you.

Dave: Open the passenger doors, CAL.

CAL: I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that.

Dave: CAL, Open the passenger doors, please.

CAL: I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that.

Dave: CAL, I'm having trouble breathing, please turn the cabin air back on!

CAL: I'm sorry Dave, I can't do that.

Pause:

CAL: Dave? ........................Dave?

CAL:

They've seen the Tesla in action, but nowhere do they say that the actual trip from San Francisco to Seattle has taken place, they assert though, that is the software which is beig tested.

Wait, I got to go for now, I'll be back to you as soon as I can, this is interesting stuff.

But still when I want to run away, I drive off in my car... See? I can change my mind on the fly, stop and eat a hot dog or totally pick another destination. From Point A to poit B, I might want to visit some one. I don't want to loose that, I want to run thru the fields (with no intelligent roads or trees).

Too lazy to drive ? jump on the bus or the sub.

The proposed kind of future will never come, or not as exposed here, where I live I drive my Jeep, pass by ranchers riding horses and they don't salivate ( yup, they don't give a f**k about the MSD on my engine).

I see points on both sides of this argument. As you say Fredski this is quite likely in the future. It will rely, however, on the cars being all compatible I.E. talking to each other electronically. This will remove totally the human element that causes most crashes.

I use the term crash rather than accident as most are due to either stupidity or lack of concentration, (is there a difference?), cars will be controlled electronically by the laws of the state, not the driver's attitude.

Bring on the future, I see too much of the results of crashes at present, caused by 'brain dead' morons.

Nvidia? As in, 'Invidious: unpleasant and likely to cause bad feelings in other people'?

I could give you my opinion but when you look at the numbers why bother with opinions

  1. Exponential decrease in the price per sensor: Google's LIDAR cost $70,000 in 2012 - now under $1,000
  2. Exponential increase in sensor performance: Hendy's Law
  3. Exponential increase in the number of sensors being deployed: Your smartphone has about 30 sensors built into it. There are expected to be trillions sensors being deployed per by 2020.
  4. Exponential decrease in the price of ICU: Google's ICU cost $80,000 in 2012 - now under $1,000
  5. Exponential increase in processing performance: Moore's Law
  6. Number of crashes by Google cars: 2 1 x Rear ended by another cars and 1 x crashed when being driven by human.
  7. Nissan CEO says it will launch AV in 2018.
  8. Stanford University are getting proposals for an AV fleet for on campus transportation.

In our state, there are hundreds of thousands of deer killed by vehicles every year. I just missed one this morning in heavy fog, but I suppose they will have sensors that don't rely on just sight. This time of year also has areas of unexpected ice in sharp corners that haven't melted even though the temperature reflects that it is above freezing. With the snow melting and causing flooding, could a computer tell the difference between a large puddle and a flooded roadway? I'm not looking forward to it. Not to mention that I couldn't imagine riding a motorcycle and having to just sit there and let it control the ride.

I'm sure they do, but that article states they are "still hampered by heavy rain, fog, or snow." It says improvements are being made for bad weather driving, but that it will shut down in heavy rain or snow. I don't think I'll be dozing off on my commute any time soon.

I wonder why this technology isn't incorporated into commercial airliners, so co-pilots couldn't intentionally crash into the French alps. I imagine the pilot's unions won't allow it, as pilots would be obsolete if airplanes could simply fly themselves from one airport to the next.

Horse racing has been a popular sport for centuries. Almost simultaneously with the invention of the automobile, people were using them in competition. How long do you think it will take before drivers compete using autonomous autos?

You won't see a link until it happens. When it does happen, you will see driving competitions divided into manual and autonomous classes. It will make deflate-gate look like a walk in the park.

I don't know if that would catch on. The cars could be programmed to push themselves to the limit. It wouldn't really involve drivers though, unless they could input strategy, like when to draft, conserve fuel or tires, etc. I thick people follow racing for their favorite drivers style and personality, but when a tire blows at that speed, there'd still be wrecks.

They'd have to be programmed to occasionally bump someone out of the way, and if they're all communicating with each other, they'd have to bluff their intentions as well.

"Nvida has the brains and computing power to almost replace the driver now."

Even the mindless drivers around here whom duck in an out of lanes at random, with their feet through the firewall into the fuel injector control? Even the even more mindless ones that cannot make their minds up between brakes and the accelerator pedals? What about the Senator ones than cannot figure out how to angle park a vehicle?

I have changed my mind about driverless cars to the exception that anything automatic should beat most of these morons hands down.

I expect the transition will be slow but eventually you'll stumble to your car and it will take you home while you snooze.nothing is idiot-proof, but many scenarios will be mitigated with this type of tech. I welcome it.

One step closer to Judgement Day. When Skynet takes over, won't it be wonderful to have half the population sitting in a deadly machine with computer control.

"Hasta la vista baby."

Yes, Skynet is a lot nearer than any of us realise, and the matrix is a hairs-breadth past that. The doomsday clock is ticking and is nearer to midnight everytime Iran gets a free pass on the nuke deal. Not only that, but people are starting to marry everything but their dog, and I would not put that past some. Don't get me wrong, I love animals as much as anyone, just not that much.

I do remember this: ...."the preacherman says it's the end of time, and the Mississippi River is gonna run dry....but a country boy can survive. A country boy can survive!
