Give Me Required Battery Specification

04/02/2015 3:19 PM

torque = 71.4 newton meter

rpm = 48

p = 2*3.14* rpm * torque / 60

p = 360 rpm.newton meter

the radius of the wheel is 0.28 meter.

i want to drive device for 60 kilo meter.

what should be battery specification?

That ought to do it!

Will the battery be moving with this wheel?

What about air drag?

How much bearing friction?

Will the wheel just spin in place or will it be moving something else?

How does this wheel stay stabilized, just by gyroscopic action?

How much road friction will there be?

What is the moment of inertia of this wheel?

How much of my questions make any sense to you?

Will you be riding on this one wheel?

How much do you weigh?

How will you sit on this moving wheel?

Have you asked Dean Kamen about patent infringement?

Rather than the battery specs, I would start with the motor specs and what is available.

I suggest to go with 36 or 48 Volts DC. It is easier to wire and reduces losses, compared to 12 volts (or lower voltage systems)

Once you find a motor and you can keep your construction weight under 172.3 kg (batteries included) you will need a battery of 48 Volts/ 48 Ah or 8 batteries of 12 Volts, each 24 Ah. In this case you will end up with 8 batteries, that you can give a place to balance your gravitation point around the said wheel.

The batteries (sealed L/acid) weigh 7,20 kg each.

Your weight must be restricted to 78.5 kg (clothes included)

Your wheel will be able to roll over a action radius of 60.62 km at a speed in reference to the ground of 42.7 km/h on a level, paved road with max. head winds of 15 km/h.

You will be able to travel the wheel in upright position with a surface against the wind of 0.653 m2 - non aerodynamically balanced.

You will need a charger to that can provide between 2 amps minimal and maximal 12 amps for the said combination battery up to 54 volts DC.

Your charging time will be between 5.2 and 23.5 hours depending on the charging current.

The lifetime of your battery will be shortened by 63% when using 12 amps, compared with an optimal charger of 5.25 amps.

There are some wheels with a built- in DC 48 Volts brush less motor that have avg. the size you referred to. They also have a drum brake with cable in it. The tire is rubber and is about 3" wide (air type)

You will need probably 300 to 750 Watts to ride comfortable. 500 W and 750 Watts are standard types.

Speed regulators for these are easy to find. Also 48 to 12 Volts DC adapters for e.g. lights and horn.

I understand that all the figures are theoretical ones and that external factors may influence the results. To name one: a flat tire causes also losses.

I think one of these will do it:

Artillery battery:

Or this:

Yes.Not a battery.

Good catch.

..."This electric unicycle can be charged in less than an hour and can reach speeds of up to 20 miles per hour.

Like a hoverboard, the S1000 is an upright vehicle that uses gyroscopes to stay balanced. The rider will use their body to control the unit just like a hoverboard. Lean forward and the vehicle goes forward. Lean back and the vehicle goes back.

The S1000 can carry up to 280 lbs and with it's 1,000-watt motor powered by a removable 60-volt/5.8-Ah lithium battery, it can be fully recharged in 45 minutes. This is capable of traveling up to 15 miles on a 45 minute charge."... Something like this?

Don't lean forward on the edge of a cliff to look down while riding a Segway.

Sad story.

Re: Give Me Required Battery Specification

For a start, p = 2*3.14*torque / 60, not 2*3.14* rpm * torque / 60

Assuming it's an exercise, so torque and speed etc stay constant, and the wheel is directly connected to the motor shaft, total number of radians turned = 60000/0.28. Work = rads*torque = 15.3 MJ = 4.25 kWh.

That's at motor output, so need motor efficiency to size the battery. Maybe 75% for a small motor like 360 W, gives 5.7 kWh. For comparison, a car battery of say 100 A.h at 12 volt has 1.2 kWh.
