how to calculate the size of the DC to DC sold state relay for a particular work?

Either:

  • Look it up in the equipment supplier's datasheet, or
  • Measure its length, breadth and height, and multiply these together.

I'd look for one of the thousands of web sites that explains it.

Then I wouldn't have to rely on strangers.

Define "Size"!

Size usually refers to the width, length height and is usually measured.

If you talk operating parameters you will need to say what particular work it is for.

Voltage, Amperage comes to mind.

Do not forget to look at the environment it needs to work in.

If searching the internet, you'll get better results with "solid state" than "sold state".

So true. That might be the missing information!

But you cannot use any type of relay until it is sold to someone.

Vendors are usually a little fussy about that.

No need to calculate. All you need to know is how much voltage you have to operate it (the input voltage) and how much of a load is connected. Then pick one out of a catalog.

Come on now you are a final year student. Read the relay datasheets, read the application notes and calculate the load current and voltage for your LED lighting project application then chose a solid state or standard relay accordingly.

The final year project is intended to engage you in the application of your existing knowledge and get you to perform your own research into all the areas you don't know. Just like the real world.

Yes - and the most fun part of final project labs was watching projects, hopefully ones belonging to other students, go pop or up in smoke.

I remember when triacs were just released and nearly $50 each, when $50 was the equivalent of $200, and seeing one student blow his third one and start crying. Great fun!

I love it! Great fun when it is learning by trial and error. Gives an understanding to the concept of letting all of the smoke out!

Best project I saw was three electrical students trying to work with a complex high speed microprocessor (or similar). It was a large format 50 or 60 pin job in a thru hole mount socket, yes they wired all the pins up to long insulated hook up wires and back to a (yes you guessed it) breadboard.

Took them two days to figure out the bread board they initially used had some faulty intermittent tracks in it. Even with a replacement breadboard it never worked (regardless of if the high speed circuit was correctly wired). A failure, but a very good learning experience in high speed signal operation and analysis.

An infamous one was a student who was demonstrating his project in front of the class. All was going well until one of the students asked what that switch in his hand was for, turns out his project didn't work at all and he was faking it using a switch to simulate operation. He was ejected from the course for unethical behaviour.

I blew a $50 milling machine bit in class once, probably because I was running it backwards. Do you know those things cut just as well in reverse (for a while) on Aluminium?

Tape measure, Ruler, Micrometer, Caliber, Yardstick, Meterstick....

Along with Calculator, Computer with spread sheet, Pencil and paper, Abacus...

DO NOT look in the mfg specs, you may get some useful info, which is more than you said in the OP. -- JHF
