I get quite a few shaving cuts ...

Perhaps it would be helpful to know what you want to stain/dye. Cloth? Anodized aluminum? Wood? Hair? Leather?

Affordable, what does that mean? Bill Gates affordable or me when I was in college affordable?

Vegetable based dye or ink perhaps. What's the application and how much do you need? Are you marking children's tee shirts or do you need 40,000 gallons to pour into a waste treatment plant?

Also, indelible against what exactly? Water, solvents, acid, etc?

We need much more information on the application. What's it for?

You should specify what kind of dye you want.

Color(s) and also in what medium you want to apply these. Dyes for water, oil- and/or acrylic paint or specific resin are not universal.

The cheapest for brown, but not time consistent is s**t.

What are you going to do with these varmints once you identify them? Send them to reform school?

Dye pack dye (1-methylamino anthraquinone) is not going to be a practical or safe solution.

An internet search of "animal marking dye" produced numerous farming or similar products and sprays that should do the job nicely.

I use fly dye to colour my bucktails and deer hair for fly tying.

They are claimed to be organic, and they are certainly indelible.

Photo below of a few samples

Damn what a missed opportunity. If one of them was white I could have commented

"Pretty dye for a white fly"

Ha, love the shadowing in the photo, it looks like you have been dyeing them on the carpet.

Stain, nah that will come out.

Ask the Kiwi's about sheep marking. They have special crayons in holders so that when mating, the ewe is marked. Different colours for each ram so that they can trace the genetic lines.

Crayon or similar markers fitted in the entry and exit points for your yard would probably work.

In Aus, we have branding inks that are used to identify sheep in the paddock. Different colours for neighbouring farms. Means that you can identify the owner while still 100 yards away, as opposed to the ear marking tags or clip codes where you need to be closer.

Depends on the bars location.

Here's a joke I just came up with - Farmer covered in animal marking dye walks in to a bar, barman says "you look terrible so why are you smiling so much" framer replies "This morning I was dyeing, but now I am not!"

Oh come on, that's funny.

It is funny, yet wrong on so many levels....... Like that picture that was floating around on the Internet, showing a guy with a sheep riding on the bars of his motorbike, sometimes captioned Wyoming and other times Kiwi date night.
