Sand Castle Duplication Using Cloth or Film

04/13/2015 4:52 PM

Could a cloth or film be used for duplicating a sand castle? The material could be draped over the sand castle and then using a flat knife or such push the cloth or film close to the castle surface and sprayed with whatever would stiffen the covering.?

This might help forming a mold of an ancient castle or perhaps give insight of making a doll house of a section of a sand castle which depicts an ancient castle.

(my wife just told me she was going to walk our cat through garage. I caught my mistake. Instead of writing castle I wrote garage. Oh well. I think it is all right now.)

Mr Heidi

Never build your garage/castle on/with sand!!!

Why don't you buy a 3D printer and print your duplicate castles ?

How does dD printer work? I visited a plastic manufacturing company a long time ago and discused ( sp?) the mold making process. I think they need a wood block of some shape to pore the plastic over it. A puffed up film or cloth needs some help to be usefull.

What is the formula for a spray used to harden cloth or film?

May be an amine, OH, ketone, catalyst, etc. that could be found to really harden the flimsy shape of the first try

C&N news show all kind of different organic ring structures - what works the best. No sense trying to show all the chemical structures. It goes on endlessly.

I got a couple of C's and a B in organic chemistry. How I ever did that I don't know. That was a long time ago. I have been getting C&E news for years.

Should have put in a question mark. "What works the best?" Not just "what works the best." with just a period at the end of sentence.

Simple method- Make the sand castle. Shake some talcum powder onto the sand castle for use as a parting agent. Place some cloth (burlap, cheese cloth, "T' shirt rags, etc.) on the sand castle without any folds or irregularities in the cloth (use strips about 2-4" wide). Spray some 3M aerosol fast setting glue on the exterior of the cloth. Take more strips and spray one side. Apply the strips on with the wet glue side on first on the previous layer. Spray this layer with the glue and repeat until you have a firm and rigid mold. Let set for an hour or more while glue sets up.

Remove the laminated mold off the sand castle. Place fill holes in the upper surfaces of each section of the mold. You now have a sand castle mold for use with sand.

This is similar to how paper cache is used. For a real strong mold (not so simple method but much stronger and longer useful life) replace the cloth with fiber glass cloth and the glue with fiberglass epoxy resin. With this method you don't have to wait between coats but it won't hurt it to wait.

For making sand castles put the mold down on a surface. Put sand in the fill holes and compact it. Continue doing this until the mold is completely filled. Lightly tamp it to compact the sand and fill any voids. Put a little water in to continue to compact it. Continue to add and tamp until the sand is compacted as much as possible but not so hard that it breaks or lifts the mold off the sand. When finished lift the mold off and enjoy your sand castles.

Good Luck, Old Salt
