Can the CR4 Software Automatically Add a "Reported" Flag to Reported Posts.

04/22/2015 3:05 PM

We seem to be getting an awful lot of SPAM. Some members (especially "Tornado") are very diligent about reporting the posts. The problem is that after you have reported a post you have to go back to it to post a reply which simply says "reported", so that, other members do not need to.

Couldn't the software automatically generate a flag when a post is reported to avoid a lot of unnecessary work?

There has been a lot of spam and I understand your frustration. Know that whether you report it or not, moderators do their best to delete spam ASAP.

I've proposed a change to allow certain members to be able to remove spam posts. It's in the process of receiving approval and then will go into the queue for programming.

In the meantime, I've added a bunch of terms to our spam filter. This means that posts that contain certain words (think astrologer, skin cream, movie streaming, etc.) will be automatically deleted. The filter is automatic but it is not instant - there is a delay between posting and deletion.

Can you add the words, "anonymous poster" to that spam filter?

Sorry Savy, but I do not fully agree with you: adding words to the spam filter will probably create more problems than solutions, as some words you mention can be used in a regular post. What if ANY member can report a spam message, and if there are three reports (just to prevent anyone from getting suspicious) the filter automatically proceeds to eliminate it? This certainly will allow the community to collaborate with the admin and keep the site clean ;-)

One more thing: to facilitate the identification of a reported mail, a red flag should be placed at the bottom of the post for each "report"

(perhaps between the "report" and the "Edit" buttons

I think anybody, not just selected members, should be able to send a post all but immediately to a holding bin, until Admin can evaluate it. If accepted, it gets reposted without the "boot" option. If anybody boots too many good posts, that privilege could be suspended for a while.

Any such reforms will entail some programming effort, which should be kept reasonably simple. Thanks in advance for any progress in this area.

(think astrologer, skin cream, movie streaming, etc.)

It is too bad all posts containing the above words will be automatically deleted, some of them could be legit.

And just because someone reports a post does not mean it is inappropriate, so an automatic flag is a very bad idea.

Those assigned to do their certain jobs should do them as best as they can and deal with it.

Thank you.

I have reported at least a dozen in the last week or two!

No, thank you.

Just to be clear: do you normally also post a reply stating that you've reported the offending post? Normally I do; sometimes I don't .

I report only to Admin usually and leave them to handle it as some of the spam might be OK for them. Its not really my decision.....

If I'm going to take the time to report it then I will take the time to post that it has been reported.

I believe the ADMIN has enough to do rather than deal with multiple reports on the same garbage that got spambot posted.

That's just my opinion.

Maybe we should have a RA score for the first person that reports it?

On continuing to follow this issue, the pattern of one- or two-time posters becomes clear. Maybe if everyone's first three posts were first vetted by Admin before being posted....

A downside to that approach would be some delays for each newbie's first three posts. So I'm just brainstorming that rather than recommending.

Probably no more work than dealing with them after several reports, which includes dealing with the reports.
