IED's

05/06/2015 8:54 PM

is this practical to 'dissolve' ieds....road side bombs....1st they are encased in plastic bottles...2nd they use ammonium nitrate in the plastic bottle for the explosion .... Can a person 'crop dust ' the region of interest with alcohol to 'dissolve the plastic enough to dilute the ammonium nitrate with a second dusting of water?....

No.

If you want a better understanding of dealing with an IED, see the movie "The Hurt Locker"

You should notice the image shows seven explosive artillery rounds have been made into an IED. Pouring alcohol on this will do nothing.

The problem with IEDs is clearly spelled out in the name, first letter "Improvised". They can be of many different constructions using many different materials (including modified ordnance) and covered or buried. This makes neutralisation with some form of acid ineffective in most cases, and easy to quickly adapt to for those cases.

That would be the ethanol dosing thread, right?

NO. If for no other reason, many or most IED's are not encased in plastic bottles. There is a whole variety of cases for them. Some would include: metals pipe; plastic pipe; vests; paper bags; plastic bottles; and just about anything imaginable. Makers of IED's usually are not the most stable people whether they be foreign military, terrorists, civilian or otherwise. Their main goal is to maim or kill people. A pipe bomb with ball bearings, nails, cotter pins, metal chards, etc. will usually do more damage than one just depending an explosive.

All IED's, and all explosives require two things: an oxidizer and a fuel. Many of those used in IED's are not commonly known by other than those who want to do harm. There is the most known ANFO, ammonium nitrate (oxidizer) and fuel oil (fuel). This was the choice of Timothy McVeigh at Oklahoma City and also the 1994 World Trade explosion. NH4NO3, available at many garden centers is probably the best known component of many bombs. There are many others that can be used that are readily available materials. Nitrates, Chlorates, Organic Peroxides, Black Powder, explosive powder from shot gun shells or bullets, match heads, Vaseline, aluminum foil, vinegar, baking soda and other common materials.

Even the military explosive C-4 can be made very easily at home.

The 'crop dusting' is not practical if for no other reason than there are so many different explosives and most would not be effected by the ethanol. Most plastics are also not effected by it.

Note to all- All information included in this response is readily available from Google or similar search engines. No secret information, procedures for making bombs, methods of detonation, effects of various bomb types or other classified or sensitive (whether illegal or not) information has been used here. If you want more information do it yourself! IED's are not toys! I'm sure that more bomb makers have been killed than victims from their bombs (except military).

During an approved and sponsored training course I saw a well placed IED's detonated from 1/2 mile away. It was placed in a car and detonated. The largest part left was the torque converter. Unless you are an OED stay away!

Good Luck, Old Salt
