Share Your Experience With Cable TV

05/18/2015 12:01 AM

I am in Bangalore. Every time there is rain, cable TV channels develop distortion with first few drizzles and later vanish !!! I understand that such problems are far acute even with satellite dish TV. Decades ago - our telephone lines used to go dead- if it rained. Now-a-days it does not happen. My Computer and internet keeps working. Imagine power utilities trying to bury 11KV and 110KV and 220KV cables underground while simple TV cable fails fro slightest drizzle!! Is it due to poor quality of cables used and ,outdoor exposed junction boxes? Is it so in your areas / countries too?

Never had a problem until the cable company gets into a contract dispute with a network and drops it for several weeks, or they start jacking the rates up on you, or...

Oh - you meant problems concerning reception - my error.

If system of selection of component and installation is properly done, there won't be any problem.

The Agency is seripus in making money but never bather for quality of Service. But this can happen only where we are living and not in foreign countries where law is stringent.

I have also sufferred for such deficiency in Service.

Maybe the cable ends somewhere at an aerial and the rainy atmosphere has an impact on the signal.

I know that some Digital Aerial TV is affected by rain.

try https://www.google.com/?#q=digital%2Baerial%2Bnot%2Bworking%2Bwhen%2Braining

Water in a junction box might also be a problem. Try playing more cards or other games when reception is bad. Surely you have not forgotten that there is other things to do when the TV is not on.

It's probably not your ground connected cable, but the source of the programs.

Most likely all your programming is coming from satellite down links, or ground based line of sight communication links. This is at microwave frequencies, and is susceptible to water vapor in the atmosphere. Since you indicate this upset starts with rain fall, and your indicating the cables are buried, it's most likely the ground based microwave systems that are affecting this, and not your cable connection.

My experience with "Cable" was that in areas were cables cannot be run, line-of-site microwave links are used, with the resultant loss of signal during rain storms. The receiver dish was the size of a standard domestic sat dish mounted on a water tower. The transmitter dish was 12 miles away.

It's either water getting into the electronics, or there is a microwave link. Microwave links are susceptible to precipitation, especially heavy rain.

Sounds like bad cable. I have satellite here in the U.S. and it is not much affected by weather except for heavy snow. However, my phone lines are 40 years old above ground. They do develop noise when it rains. For ten years the phone company has been saying they are going to replace them soon.

You might have a small company that is getting their signal via satellite...

We have Direct TV satellite service.

If it is clear and not windy, we get great service.

If the wind blows or it rains the HD picture goes blank.

If it rains hard the TV does not work at all, even low def picture goes away.

I hate it!

If you call, the person on the other end, who can't speak English runs you through a mindless litany of useless instructions, knowing that there is no fix until the weather clears and you will be frustrated and just hang up 5 minutes into the ordeal.

We have problem in Mumbai with Dish TV when it rains heavily. But Cable TV works o.k even when it rains. Even big Dish TV like Tata Sky, Dish, Vidieocon have problem when it rains heavily.

I still have the free TV with the antenna on the roof. Since they went digital, it's now a UHF antenna, and I have many more channels. One or two get bad service when it rains, but most are fine. I am 50 miles from where the signals are broadcast. My 38 year old phone line was never noisy until the squirrels chewed on it. After a few days it went dead, and now I have a new one.

Why would you get a new squirrel?

Lol, it's a new phone line, not a new squirrel. Maybe if the phone had rung while he was chewing?

My experience with cable is that there is hardly anything worthy of paying money to see.

The avg. cable bill is something like $125/month and the avg. TV is on in the house about 6 hrs/day. Most people are broke, have about $15K in credit card debt, etc. and still keep the TV on, feeding in all kinds of junk to their minds. Hardly any of which will help them live life more successfully. DUH!

There is always the option of radio instead. The pictures are better.

My beef with cable has to do with the cable guy, who was completely weird. He talked me into going to some fake medieval restaurant.

I got rid of cable after someone crashed into a utility pole down the street. I still have a TV sized hole in the wall where the TV went trough.

Re: Share Your Experience With Cable TV

At the end of so many people commenting- from different parts of the world- it appears to me that TV reception does get affected by rain / wind etc- be it cable connection or direct satellite link. When we had radio - I don't think we had problem with reception when it rained or snowed.

Summary - scientists need to investigate whether it is problem with cable or junction box etc. I still do not think there is problem with satellite signal transmission. Communication companies are trying for expand their business and get into multimedia communication. Some have fiber optic buried cables with some junction boxes on foot path side (In India). Do they get affected too by rain / snow/ wind etc. If this is known - customers can choose the service provider accordingly. Just at this moment- after reading so many comments - I still remain confused as to exact cause of bad reception.

With this novel device, fitted with my patented piercing head interface, you can connect directly to the satellite, eliminating any weather induced degradation of signal.
