Need Help Finding the Meaning of a Drawing Symbol

07/14/2015 9:13 PM

Is anyone familiar with the highlighted symbol in the image below? I can't find any reference to it, but have seen it on several old drawings that were drawn by different drafters.

Looks like material specs. Maybe a sign for a material code. Check ANSI if they have this on their page. www.ansi.org

Can you provide more information and context for where this is used exactly.

What type of drawings and what was the reference above specifically referring to on the drawing?

That's the unobtanium concentration level symbol for the Mattel prototype Transformer action figure. Hasbro actually got the contract so this information is nothing but an interesting piece of toy history.

I found it... I found it... It's a clothing specification.

There are Chromoly fibers running through their underwear to keep the seams from exploding!

4130 seems to be a low alloy (Cr / Mo) Steel.

My WAG would be that the symbol is hand drawn version of an old logo for one of the organisations that define steels which could be SAE, ANSI, ASME, BSI etc

I did wonder if it could be 'w', shorthand for the German werkstoff (material) but it wouldn't make sense to have 'mat'l' preceding it.

I have never seen this particular notation before, and I have worked with drawings from almost 100 years ago. As has been stated, we need more contextual information about these drawings. What country are they from? Are they from a particular company? This may be some company's internal material specification. For example, General Electric uses a corporate wide system, EMPIS, for material and finish specifications in all their drawings.

Aww that's no fun. It is so much more fun coming up with coming up with wild ass fantasies that match with minutia details not presented!

I will say that this looks more like ball point pen writing than pencil or fountain pen writing.

Maybe this is one of the metal formulas that metallurgist Walter P. patented.

Outside of this, let the fables begin.

Can you give us a bit more of a snapshot of the line of text? Is it possibly an early version of @ ?

It looks to me like a badly written "@" sign or "at"....

So it would read :- "material at 4130 specification" for me.

In the day (just after WW II) when pierced and cast was the only selection, came along welded or wrought pipe, welded seam tubing and pipe. CP cast pipe, PT pierced seamless tubing and wrought pipe WP or welded pipe/tubing. For high pressure hydraulic and gas tubing, it was a while before adoption of WP in place of PT.
